You could say we are regulars :)
We have booked several weekends in this chateau over the past few years and we will continue to do so simply because we always have the best experience, love the castle, the high location with it's breathtaking view of the valley and the friendly staff.

Each room has it's "style" the tower rooms are round and spacious, the rooms with a balcony are full of light and have a great view, the ones with a bathtub have a real high and authentic kind of bathtub with feet like you would expect to see in this kind of setting BIG LIKE.

The gardens are worth exploring and a little tip : go and check out the backside of the castle it is "untouched" and the atmosphere is totally medieval with its iron bars guarded windows, gargoyles and impressive high walls !

Room Tip: Rooms with a window/balcony to the garden have the best view !

To stay in a beautiful round room in the turret of a chateau for less than €100 per night is amazing. You drive up a steep hill to the village of Hattonchatel and the chateau is right at the end looking dominant and ancient. Your room keys are huge iron affairs and the walls are so thick that the free wifi, which is fast and available downstairs, doesn't always make it upstairs to the bedrooms.

We took the option of supper on the chateau, which is multi-course with champagne and two bottles of good wine. Supper cost about €75 each but was worth it for the lovely food and wine and the great atmosphere of the huge and ornately decorated dining room with its enormous fireplace, the flaming logs topped up by Fabien, who is also the waiter, sommelier, and general major domo.

We had the good luck to see the owners, who were visiting for a few days, a couple as charming and down-to-earth as they come.

Tak, takk, et merci a tous.

With these words we were greeted a welcome.... and indeed were were treated as guests to a castle.
The room - they have apx 10 rooms in total - were perfect. Sizeable room, good large bed, modern bathroom ... and no TV .... this is a castle. But the wi-fi works OK.
The dinner - needs to be pre-booked with Mr. Fabian - who is both "the receptionist", the castle's caretaker, and the head chef - was enjoyed in the large dinner hall - with just enough seats to cater the hotel's max 20 guests. A 4-course dinner excellently prepared with good wines at a very fair price of just €75 per person inclusive of the wine menu, which was served in bottles not in glasses meaning that for each wine the entire bottle was for the table.
It is a passion to run a castle.... and Mr. Fabian is doing just so making everyone staying at the Hattonchatel Castle feeling a little bit more welcome than in any ordinary hotel.

I spent an enchanted night here on Memorial Day, complete with a turret room and a four course dinner that was the most elegant meal I have ever experienced. The grounds are straight out of a travel poster with sweeping views that stretch for miles over the French countryside. I will go back soon.

We stayed 2 nights as a family of 4 in the gorgeous Belle Skinner Suite. This chateau was rebuilt after WW1 by an American, Belle Skinner, and it retains the design and character of a luxury chateau, having been made into a hotel with 10 bedrooms only 10 years ago. It is probably the best quality accommodation in the Verdun area - the main site (Douamont Ossuary and forts) are 40 minutes north but Les Eparges and the outstanding Montsec American Monument are close by. The grounds and views of the chateau are spectacular, a marvellous place to relax. Next door in the Hattonchatel village church we found a rare 1523 sculpture (by Ligier Richier) not even mentioned in most tourist guides.

Breakfast is served every morning but dinner has to be booked - superb and in the most marvellous castle dining room setting. The chef also doubles up as gardener and hotel manager ! The village only has a small bar, the local town Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel has a supermarket and there is only a limited selection of other dining places within 10 km.

Open only for the summer months and occasional holiday it is a rare find and frequented mainly by non-French visitors. Note that the contact number on the website is a Spain number (the owner owns other hotels), they really should put the Chateau number on the website to help travellers.

Room Tip: Only the bridal suite (Belle Skinner) can accommodate a family of 4, though not cheap
