We were given a 2 night break voucher, decided we didn't want to venture too far afield (we live in South Devon) and so chose the Bark House. The sunny weather on arrival bode well and so it proved. Martin greeted us warmly, showed us to our room and offered tea in the lounge when we were ready. Although the decor in the bedroom was a touch tired, it was comfortable and spotlessly clean. We immediately felt relaxed and decided to book dinner on the first night. Our initial concern that £22 for a 2 course meal in a guest house was just a tad expensive soon dissipated - the food was superbly cooked and the portions generous, with mountains of fresh veg - so good that we had no hesitation in booking dinner for the second night, which was equally excellent! Coffee/drinks in the lounge with good conversation after dinner completed a wonderful break. Martin and Mel have the knack of immediately making one feel comfortable and freely offered useful information on places in the vicinity to visit. We will return!

We were given a voucher for a night away with a gourmet dinner and as we both like Exmoor and had read so many good reviews, we decided on Bark House, it was not a mistake. When we arrived we were met by Martin who carried our suitcase up to our room and advised us that when we were ready to come down to the lounge and a tray of tea would be brought in to us. Absolute bliss sitting in front of a log fire with tea and cake! The dinner was very good too. We had goats cheese souffle as starter then I had sea bass and summer pudding for dessert and my husband had duck breast and then kiwi and passion fruit pavlova. The portions are large and delicious. Wines and drinks are very reasonable. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and far superior to a lot of the big hotels. The bed was very comfortable so we had a very good nights sleep. Martin was on his own so was kept quite busy but was still the perfect host. We definitely will go back.

After a faultless 2 night stay last year we returned to the Bark House in February for 3 nights and it just got better and better. On arrival Martin & Mel were there to greet us with tea and home made cake in front of a roaring fire. Our room was homely and very comfortable - we slept so very well. The food is the best we have tasted in a long while - all cooked to order and exceptionally tasty and a reasonably priced good wine list. Breakfast is never a disappointment either. Pre-dinner drinks in the lounge and back there for tea or coffee and to finish our wine (or another bottle). Nothing is too much trouble and it is all done in such a relaxed, easy way. The surrounding area is beautiful on foot, by bike (watch out for the hills) or out in the car. We rarely go back twice let alone 3 times but this is our special part of Devon and we will be back. Thank you to Martin and Mel for looking after us so well and don't change the recipe. Sarah and Neil x

We stayed there after being given some vouchers for Christmas, it was such as beautiful location and the owners were very friendly and welcoming despite them both being unwell.

We didn't have dinner there but if breakfast was anything to go by I'm sure it would be lovely.

The bedding is the room was very good quality and there is a lovely sitting room with log fire. We had a lovely weekend.

My husband and I were treated by our son for these 2 nights at the Bark House and it was made even more special by the outstanding welcome we received from Martin & Melanie. On our arrival we were treated to Tea & very tasty home made cake in front of the open log fire and to top that we had a delicious meal cooked by Martin and a top class dessert made by Melanie. The room was massive and the bed was very comfortable (I even sneaked a look at the make of pillow, came home & ordered one online)! I would certainly stay again!
