This short break was more than expected. This was due mainly to the location and quality of accommodation that Brekka Lodge offered, As a base to explore the area near and far it was superb.
The quality of the accommodation made it difficult to leave to explore what was there to be explored. I would like to come back, but for a longer period next tome.
I can't even begin to describe how amazing our stay was at Brekka. We stayed there for a week as we explored Iceland during our second week there. The Whale Fjord where Brekka is located is gorgeous, yet feels remote which we loved. We stopped at the Kronan outside of Reykjavik for groceries on our way and took the scenic route to get to Brekka. We had no trouble finding it with the directions and all the instructions worked perfectly!
Brekka was clean, warm, and the perfect place for my husband and I to relax in. The internet is fast, TV worked great, and the hot tub was amazing. We saw the Northern Lights two nights in a row and Jon sent me a message to let me know to look out for them. He was so helpful in answering any questions I had during our stay.
I love to cook and the kitchen was well-equipped with some spices, food odds and ends, and plenty of dishware. The convection oven was amazing and cooked perfectly. My only request would be a couple sharper paring knives, but that's such a minor detail and we did fine with the ones there.
The bathroom was HUGE with plenty of towels and hot water as well as a washer which was so very handy for us.
We were less than 2hours from the Golden Circle and a 15min drive from the hiking trail to Glymur Waterfall(gorgeous and totally worth the slightly difficult hike).
We can't wait to come back and perhaps stay in Brekka as well as one of their other lodges.
Brekka is located just off the main road up a 1km well maintained gravel road.
The actual turn is a little hard to spot but it is soon after a red roofed white building on the left opposite the Kalastadir farm road if you are approaching on route 47 (after travelling North through the tunnel) , it is very soon just round the next bend. If you get to Hotel Glymur you have gone too far.
During the day you can see the group of cabins up on the hillside but difficult at night.
Brekka is one of the last cabins you reach up the gravel road and enjoys a spectacular elevated position with astounding views.
The cabins are well spaced apart and you hear nothing from the other cabins.
This warm and comfortable rental is simply wonderful , huge open plan main space with wrap round giant windows offering views from sunrise to sunset (when we visited ,Oct).
Three double/twin bedrooms all with very comfortable beds and well thought out kitchen dining area with all you need for cooking meals.
A large modern bathroom with a washing machine , and of course the ideal hot tub just a few steps down from the enormous wrap round decking area around the cabin.
The hot tub is well screened from the (far away) other cabins and not overlooked.
We watched a small amount of aurora from the tub 2 out of 3 nights.
We barely used the upper lounge area as we were a small family group of 3.
Internet here is very fast and reliable.
From Brekka we did an easy day out across to the Geysir / Thingvellir area.
We also visited Langjokkul glacier (with "Into the Glacier") on a crystal clear blue skied calm day from Husafell. (an easy drive just over an hour away).
Reykjavik is only an hour away for a day out (and its only 2hrs or so to the international airport Keflavik).
The owner Jon is a very helpful host both before and during your stay and makes sure you have an excellent experience in his lodge.
We stayed for five nights in Brekka in early October, and absolutely loved everything about it. Perfectly situated for both Reykjavik and the Golden Circle, with some utterly jaw-dropping views out of the living room/kitchen windows.
The weather wasn’t the best while we were there, but we still made good use of the hot tub and cosy furniture after our long days exploring Iceland.
Jon was fantastic communicating throughout the booking process, and if anything, the place actually looked better in the flesh (wood?) than it did in the photographs.
One thing I will say is that it’s fairly difficult to find, especially if you’re arriving after dark, but Jon’s instructions went a long way towards minimising our confusion.
A thoroughly enjoyable week, and we honestly can’t recommend Brekka enough to fellow travellers.
Incredibly happy with my stay at the Brekka lodge! Amazing morning views and super cozy on the inside. Myself and the rest of the group (5 totall) had an awesome 3 nights.
The entrance view was a bit tough to see but we were also coming in late at night. Unfortunately no northern lights for us, but that is no fault of the cabins... we enjoyed the hot tub without them.
