Located right above Tochomae subway station, or a 10 minute walk through the pedestrian tunnel on the western side of Shinjuku station, getting here is a breeze. Plenty of signage directing you to either the North or South tower, a short queue for the lift, and here you are - all of Tokyo spread out below you.

Yes, there are better views if you pay, but this is almost as good and costs nothing at all. Both observatories are spacious, both have gift shops, one has a cafe while the other has a restaurant. On our visit there was also a shop shelling Japanese regiional specialities.

Up top volunteers are available if you have any questions, and they seem genuinely enthusiastic, helpful and committed. That is reason enough to pay a visit, but if you've just arrived this a great place to get your bearings, get advice, and look for souvenirs without the crowds and without risking being ripped off.

Highly recommended.

We visited the observatories on a chilly February evening and there was hardly anybody there. There were massive crowds at the other towers in Tokyo and this is free so I thought it was going to be packed. We saw the beautiful sights but were unable to see Mt. Fuji because of course it was night. In fact, we never saw Mt. Fuji while we were in Tokyo. All the more to return to Japan during the summertime. We had fun shopping and the dinner was pretty good. I just don’t understand why more people don’t visit?
