The food here was just ok, my wife and i have had better yakiniku places, but it is a really cool place to hang out and see what old Japan is like. A lot of tourists here, I think because of lonely planet featuring this place, but i think the locals here are used to us.

That's surely an attraction of Shunjuku, but good food can be easily find on any other place coming with better quality and cheaper price. Anyway, worhts a visit.

A very special place right outside the Shinjuku train station East entrance. If you exit the east entrance, take a left .... Stay left and head towards the studio Alta screen and through a pedestrian walkway that goes under the street you'll exit the other end right into these magical alleys. We walked the area a few times just soaking up the atmosphere before we sat down to great yakitori and cold beer. We were the only westerners at the place we ate at and were surrounded by Japanese guys eating and drinking.... And drinking... But very well behaved. This was such a special area and believe it or not, one of the women working at the place we ate spoke great English. This place lights up at night and is incredibly special.

A fascinating place. I love the charm and character of the narrow alleys packed with tiny little food stalls. Walk through and let your senses explore the smells and sights that you see coming out of each different restaurant. The excitement is mainly on the ground floor where the bar and cooking is done. Most of these places have a tiny upstairs accessed by an almost ladder-like staircase. The atmosphere upstairs is not as lively as you are not sitting in front of the grill watching your food being prepared. Caution on the drinks. We ordered yakitori but were required to purchase a drink each. Travelling with minors, we paid 1800 Yen for 3 tiny softdrinks No refills.

We really enjoyed our Yakitori at one of the small restaurants here. We knew most places charged a cover charge (ours was about $5 pp) so that did not surprise us. I liked the selection of different chicken innards to try. Is it cheap - not at all especially with beer but definitely worth trying. The 2 of us spent about $50 and were not quite full.
