The reviews here have pretty well covered it all. Be prepared for long travel days. The bus ride to and from the resort is a two and hour plus excursion due to road conditions in the area and not physical distance. Lots of potholes, switchbacks through the mountains and on the ride back horse and buggy traffic. Kudos to the bus drivers who negotiate this this bumpy twisty route as they drive using the whole road width from shoulder to shoulder at night. Airport processing is slow as its a very small airport and on arrival the mosquitoes were out in full force. Expect that the resort is located in the countryside and the nearby towns are few and not touristy. This is Cuban country life and can provide a better understanding of the people, their culture and society. The horse is the king of transportation. Cubans love their horses. A tour on horseback is available at the resort for 8 CUC per hour. Goats and chickens roam the properties and public roads. You can rent a scooter at your own peril at 25 CUC per day. Caleche rides are are cheap. So are taxis. I also think the VIP upgrade through Sunwing during booking is worth it for the first time visitor. If you decide to VIP upgrade at the resort you will not get the Superior room upgrade, you will not get your 4 room bottles, you will have paid for your wall safe upon arrival and be requesting a refund. The only advantage I could see was there was a massage included. The resort was lacking in ground pepper at this time. Otherwise very clean, mostly older adult/retirees, good staff, very laid back, lots of steps/stairs/walking (not for mobility challenged- even the Sunwing embarkment/dis embarkment in Manzanillo). Not much activities for children.

I really like this place. I already know I will come back.
- Resort is placed in a beautiful environment, surrounded by Sierra Maestra mountains. Beautiful views from the hotel
-Quiet hotel, a lot of guests in their 50 and plus. some families. People just spending time on the beach and outside of the hotel. Very good place if you want to relax and do excurtions
- Hotel surroundings and rooms very clean. Rooms are a bit outdated but everything was working well. One night we had no air condition but in the morning it was repaired
-Staff is very helpful, welcoming and polite. I didn't know how to lock/unlock the safe and my maid came to explain. people working at the reception helpful and professional. Only once a bartender didn't serve us a tea but propably, on the end of evening he was very tired. Nobody, ever asked for a tip, so rewarding hotel staff was without any pressure and with more pleasure.
- Food. Not so big choice but always tasty, clean and fresh. Limited choice in restaurants. Meat tastes very good in Cuba.
- Sunwing representative Elena is very polite, knowledgeable and helpful.
- Entertainment is basically one male band playing every evening. The men play a good music.I like it. Some guests were dancing.
- Hotel and area very safe. We went outside on foot and all people we met were simply nice and friendly. Security staff at the hotel present, discreet.
Beach. Grey sand and some rocks. In the water clean sand, no medusas and very little weeds. Water temperature warm, i could stay in the water all day. Guests tend to return to the same places on the beach. Hotel marea and Cabanas section very close to the beach, praticcally 30-50 metres
- Horse adventure to Sierra Maestra is a must. It is 5 hour ride in the mountains along the river with a stop to drink traditional cuban coffee and later bath in the river (for those who want) followed by the meal. We were served goat and it was very tasty. The cuban guide was super friendly and really taking care for our comfort and safety. Apart from the horse adventure there is another option for 3 hour ride to the village.
- Excursion to the Cayo Blanco was interesting but not so special as some people write about. Small island with white sand is beautiful, the served meal tasty. You can snorkel. What is a weak point of it is transportation from hotel to the island and back to the hotel. It takes a lot of time just waiting for the small boat to move guests there. there were over 60 people and the boat took only 12 at the time with 15 minutes round trip.
- Sunset tour by the boat was cancelled because the boat was broken but instead we were taken by the buses along the coast to see the sunset from the coast. It was i thinh better option than the boat because we could see not only the sunset but the beautiful coast.
-you exchange money at the reception. small boutique but not too much to buy
- Weather in the first week of the February; warm 28-31degrees Celsius during the day and 21-23 C the night. Dry weather , only one 15 minutes shower
-there you can walk, bike, ride a horse, hire Cubans to drive you around. to see villages, fields and mountains. Bring water, hat and sunscreen.
- transfer from the airport to the hotel takes 1h50 minutes. Long but with interesting views of the villages, fields, mountains and coast. Comfortable buses. The airport is really old. While coming in was easy then checking out was difficult- long waiting lines and one waiting room filled with tourists with limited air condition. But, after all Cubans were busy working and everything went smooth.
- My ratings; Hotel, rooms 3/5, cleanliness 5/5, staff 5/5, food 4/5, beach 4/5, weather in the dry season 5/5, geographical area 5/5, safety 5/5, excursions 4/5, airport check-in, area, comfort 2/5 (a lot to be improved)
Definitely will be back next year.

Room Tip: If you can spend more money then Cabanas section is interesting

We stayed in a cabana at the older hotel, number 25. The room was fine, no complaints at all, we actually had to turn down the AC cause it got quite cool. Beds are hard, pillows are thin but long and can be folded in two. The top sheet is quite rough, almost like a curtain? Anyhow I didn't need it, but yeah glad I didn't cause it didn't feel good on the skin.

We avoided the pool all together, the beach was perfect. Dark sand and usually but 1PM was quite hot, quite a few rocks towards the beach but easy to navigate. Horses The beach is better at the OLD hotel, the new one you got quite a walk to get to useable beach just FYI. If you plan on only using the pool, the NEW hotel is much better (up the hill). But again we never used the pool, the ocean was perfect. No issues at all without watershoes, but if you go to Cayo Blanco trip, BRING THEM, urchins are more present there for sure+ coral.

We did Cayo Blanco trip (Was ok, your mostly paying for the meal which was great, the lobster tails were amazing and huge) and we did horse and buggy to the waterfall. The waterfall was nice, the pool was very fresh, not too cold. Definitely worth the trip in my opinion to just "Get away" and see something pretty.

Staff at the restaraunt was amazing, the bartenders were hit and miss. A few of them were just clearly not having a good time. TIP: Bring a refillable mug, I had never done an all inclusive and they only provide dixie cups...probably 2 swigs at most and done. The beer was good, the alcohol tasted like turpentine. Like honestly it was just not my thing, granted I don't drink a ton but yeah, it was not pleasant tasting at all.

Do lunch or dinner up the hill at the new restaraunt, I found the food a bit better up there. Pork Ribs were super tender and good. The mutton was blah and had bone fragments in it. Anything stewed was good I found, veggies, meats, etc. They also had spaghetti and sauce. TIP: Bring your own sauces/spices, the selection is limited here as well, especially spicy. The food was otherwise fine. Desserts were yummy, I recommend getting to food earlier as selection starts to dwindle later.

We did NOT do trip to Danny's but we heard from people very worth it. We'll do it next time.

If you are looking for a quietish get away this is a great place. It is NOT a party hotel, I gotta stress that. NOT a party hotel. Mostly 30+, and a lot of retirees who spend 6 months a year there. We converted about 300 in total, maybe a bit more and were fine. We tipped pretty generously, and brought a few gifts for people. (Underwear, soaps, apple cider vinegar).

Anyhow this is well worth the cost. We'll go back for sure just to have that "got away" feeling. The weather was amazing the entire time with one 30 minute downpour around 5PM on a Monday I feel like. Was no big deal.

Room Tip: Hotel Farallon better views, the older hotel closer to beach.

We stayed at the hotel on the hill. If you are not very mobile it would be better to stay at the Marea Del Portillo than the Farallon, because there is a lot of walking up and down stairs at the Farallon, while Marea is right on the beach.
The room was fairly clean, but it looked like there had been a leak and the room smelled kind of musty at times, but we got a great price so we did not complain. We were actually booked at Punta Pierdra but when the bus stopped they said that hotel was closed. They did accommodate us at the larger hotel so it was not a problem.
The bus ride there and back is horrendous, especially coming to the hotel at night. There is a two-hour drive and tons of potholes in the road and animals so the bus had to travel very slow in spots.
The beach is nice but wear beach shoes in the water because there are sea urchins.
Snorkeling was good off the point but not great off the beach and bring your own equipment because there does not seem to be any there you can use.
The weather was great in the high 20s and 30s everyday and cooling down at night.
A visit to cayo blanca island is a must since the beach is very nice and you get fresh fish and lobster for lunch.
People at the resort are very nice since they basically come on the plane and leave when you do, which allows lots of time to get to know people if you like visiting.
The bottom floors do not get very hot water and most of the time is cold.
Traveling outside of the resort is easy with carts and horses to take you to town or the other hotel for a cheap price.
We thought the food was good.

Room Tip: higher floors get better hot water
