“Underwhelming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2012

On quality and character Dunbrody House compares favourably to most Irish Country Guesthouses but, quite frankly, its prices are outlandish and should serve as an embarrassment to the local / Irish hospitality industry. It pales in comparison to most of its Blue Book contemporaries.

Price aside, the accommodation is authentic. That is, our room was old style, spacious but not luxurious or modern. Much of the room furniture was damaged in some way making it shabby, not 'shabby chic'. What appeared to be a bathroom fan running in the downstairs room made a lot of noise and vibrations in our room. The wardrobe was tiny, there were no bathrobes, a miserly supply of bathroom products and no tea/coffee facilities in the room. The bathroom had a very large single-glazed window overlooking the house entrance and not at a great height from ground level, yet there was no curtain or other obscurity to make allowances for any sense of privacy especially at night with the lights on.

We stayed two nights, dining in the bar on the first and in the restaurant on the second. The bar food was fantastic - very nice presentation with good honest taste to back it up. Our meal in the restaurant was unremarkable and I struggle to recall any specifically interesting tastes or culinary quirks. If you do pay a visit to DBH, stick to the bar food.

My wife and I both had spa treatments. Both were enjoyable but alas at a price beyond that which we would consider the going rate for the same treatments.

DBH is a wonderful example of Irish country house accommodation but a poor example of value for money. We will not be returning. There are far too many alternatives to be enjoyed at much more reasonable prices. The other Blue Book hotels are a good place to start.

As usual Dunbrody didn't disappoint, the last time i was here a few months ago i thought it was fabulous but last Friday Night was spectacular. We had pate, and pork belly for started after having a chefs treat which was a shot glass of seafood on a bed of jelly, Yeah i know it does not sound the nicest but was gorgeous. I hastily have to move to the main course which was "Beef Joint for 2", well what came out was a platter with an array of brass saucepans with various fresh vegetables, braised beef in a wine ju, and the joint was cooked to perfection, if anything i ate too much starters and breads as the serving was huge. All this with a bottle of South African red which was full of blueberry's. 5 Hours later a walk around slade Harbour and off to bed with me. As Terminator said "I will be back"....

Stayed in Dunbrody Country House Hotel in Febuary using an internet deal. The deal was for dinner,, bed and breakfast. On arrival the receptionist accompanied us to our room and en route showed us where the bar/dining room etc was situated. The bedroom was lovely although the bathroom was abit small. The evening meal was 3 course and I could not fault it.. Many reviewers on this site complained that there was not enough food on the plates, at first glance it does look as if there is not alot but by the time I had finished I certainly could eat anymore. I chose the lamb and I can honestly say it was melt in the mouth. The breakfast the next morning was very nicely cooked no complaints there
My one big complaint is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the bedrooms. I know I could have ordered tea etc but first thing every morning I always start the day with about 3 cups of boiled water and this is no matter where I am!
I do think its a lovely house well maintained and friendly staff but would I pay the full price for a stay in it -I really don't think I would. I do think it may be overpriced for many people in these recessionary times.

stayed recently in dunbrody house, like other reviews no staff around at breakfast, rashers totally undercooked and inedible dinner was lovely but nothing you couldnt produce yourself at home wine overpriced and though sevice was good not worth the money. Being charged 3 50 for newspaper also left bad taste.

Stayed in DBH for Valentines in superior room. DBH can be found by going to the back end of no where and them turning left and following the road for another few miles :-) As a country house hotel, DBH is beautifully kept and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Our room was beautiful and we enjoyed the difference from modern hotels. There was no evidence of Valentines night anywhere and we were surprised the menu had no reference to it - particularly after hearing K Dundon on radio on the trip down that day. We were very disappointed with the food - lack of flavour and quantity and felt the whole Michelin star thing was either above us or a bit like the story of the Emperor's Clothes ! Again will not fault the hotel staff or surroundings but was left unimpressed by the food.
