On quality and character Dunbrody House compares favourably to most Irish Country Guesthouses but, quite frankly, its prices are outlandish and should serve as an embarrassment to the local / Irish hospitality industry. It pales in comparison to most of its Blue Book contemporaries.
Price aside, the accommodation is authentic. That is, our room was old style, spacious but not luxurious or modern. Much of the room furniture was damaged in some way making it shabby, not 'shabby chic'. What appeared to be a bathroom fan running in the downstairs room made a lot of noise and vibrations in our room. The wardrobe was tiny, there were no bathrobes, a miserly supply of bathroom products and no tea/coffee facilities in the room. The bathroom had a very large single-glazed window overlooking the house entrance and not at a great height from ground level, yet there was no curtain or other obscurity to make allowances for any sense of privacy especially at night with the lights on.
We stayed two nights, dining in the bar on the first and in the restaurant on the second. The bar food was fantastic - very nice presentation with good honest taste to back it up. Our meal in the restaurant was unremarkable and I struggle to recall any specifically interesting tastes or culinary quirks. If you do pay a visit to DBH, stick to the bar food.
My wife and I both had spa treatments. Both were enjoyable but alas at a price beyond that which we would consider the going rate for the same treatments.
DBH is a wonderful example of Irish country house accommodation but a poor example of value for money. We will not be returning. There are far too many alternatives to be enjoyed at much more reasonable prices. The other Blue Book hotels are a good place to start.
