“A fun cultural experience”

One of the things I wanted to experience on our trip to Quebec was a sugar shack. If for no other reason than it just seemed like a fun thing to do - and it was! They offered a carriage ride around the grounds and the atmosphere was jovial and friendly. The food was okay but a good variety and all you can eat for a good price. We enjoyed the accordion music and traditional songs. I even got to accompany on the spoons for a few minutes. Very fun! My main criticism is that we had no idea what we were doing and there was no attempt made to let us know (as English speakers) what to do or where to go - a little confusing. The seats are assigned but we had no idea and sat in the wrong place. So, if you go, make sure you find out where to check in and find your seats. I also would have enjoyed some sort of short tour on the harvesting of the maple syrup. Overall a good time just be prepared to go along with the flow.

We fell upon this sugar shack without expectation and had a most lovely experience. If it's the real thing that you're looking for, rather than a citified gourmet dining experience, then please visit La Sucrerie Blouin. The atmosphere is homey, the horse drawn carriage trip to view the maples was really quite impressive, and the food will surely fill you up on a cold evening! It's not fine dining but the type of food that would warm up a mape syrup-harvester who had come in from the cold after hours of work. As mentioned, the meal is plentiful, home made, meat-based (if you're vegetarian you may struggle here) and everything is infused with maple syrup. Sausages, meat balls, meat pie, ham, eggs, beans, beets, potatoes and then pancakes for dessert and finally, maple syrup rolled in snow. So as you can imagine, hearty! We enjoyed our experience no end...we were the only English speakers in the dining room. Plus a bonus: Isle d'Orleans is well worth the visit in itself and is easy to get to from Quebec City of Mt St. Anne (which is where we came from).

We had a fun visit to this sugar shack. Not a long drive from old QC where we were staying and fun for the little ones. The traditional meal is nothing to write home about taste-wise, but it is a ridiculous amount of food for the money and the kids enjoyed eating like the French Canadian farmers. The accordion was playing and everyone singing along in French, which was also a good cultural experience. It was my daughters 4-year-old birthday and they sang to her, provides entertainment and a free maple lollipop. Kids enjoyed the maple syrup in the snow experience as well as the horse-drawn carriage to see the sap-collecting buckets. The carriage driver spoke no English so it was mostly to enjoy the view. Very traditional and situated right on the river with a sweeping vista. Worth a visit!
