We hiked up from Gergeti town to the church and were rewarded with great views.

Route: as pointed out by the Lonely Planet you can drive up up to Gergeti and park there. C. 100 meters after the sign to turn right for the church (is the car route) you come up to a crossroads and you turn left. You'll cross onto a parking (with makeshift barrier). Carry on and you'll see a ruin of a tower and in contrary to the Lonely Planet you better stick to the left (alongside the river) of the tower as the right side is a lot steeper and the paths converge again c. 500 meter up the route. Orange dots are sprayed on rocks across the route, so its easy to follow. At some point the path appears to end and you simply turn right up the hill (only small hike up left as the path curls around the hill). You'll end up at the large field in front of the church.

You might want to add another 15-20m hike up the mountain across from the church for a great view.

Amazing mountain views!

The road up could be difficult when going by foot (30-40 min), but there are a lot of taxis in Stephansminda (don't try to drive your own car, road is REALLY terrible :) ).

Well, at first, I was in doubt to go there or not! I rent a car to get there and during our 1-day trip to Gergeti, we paid a visit to Gudauri Sky resort, Georgi-Russia Friendship Monument, Tbilisi Reserviour and ... So, if you want to go there, you will be provided with the opportunity to see other great places too. We were 4 and paid 240 GEL (including all costs)
Stepantsminda city in which Gergeti Church is located is near the Russian border and when you reach the city you should switch your car with local people's 4WD to go up to get to the Gergeti Church. I firmly suggest that if you own a 4WD, please do not put your life at risk, you are not familiar with the road, and have them to pick you up to get there because the road is one-way and particularly risky in winters.
I was there in late February and the road was drastically frozen. The off-road on ice just doubled our pleasure and that was a unique experience.
Despite the Gergeti's picturious scene, there is a natural spring, so you can drink the purest water of your life!

The location is jut 2.5km from city but what a road, I had suv 4wd, I was stuck midway and barely could go back.
The view is fascinating but you reach a location where you have to walk for maybe 15 min.

its a half n hour drive from the Gudauri Ski resort. you may hop into a regular route bus or hire a cab from Gudauri. However, if you take a normal cab, you'll need to hire another from the Kazbegi village to go up the mountain to reach the church. Beautiful location with this historic church up in the mountains. we were here in the month of Jan, and had to accept defeat n abandon our attempt to reach the church, as even the 4 wheel drive mitsubishi delica couldnt make it till the top in the thick snow and the waist high snow was too much to hike too!!! but definitely worth the try..
