Cattini was one of the best surprises I had on my trip to Italy. Their bollito misto is delicious, and it is also a great way to get to know the region's traditional gastronomy. But the really amazing experience was to talk to the owners and get to know the love and care they put in the meals they prepare... that was priceless!

You definitely must visit Cattini for lunch if you're around. This all about the authentic italian home made food and the experience of eating alongside with locals.

Forget about posh and trendy - this is a trattoria. If you read this in english you are / will be on vacation so this is the kind of place you want to visit. The sheer experience of eating local food in a local way is priceless. It's not a modern setting and it shouldn't be. This old-school & style is on of the things that sets it apart from other places you'll visit.

The staff is exceptionally friendly and they'll make their best to help you out in English - so don't be put off by the fact you don't speak Italian.

The dishes, from start to finish, is what traditional italian food is - like comfort food, like you're grandma's food, like a good tasting piece of the heart&soul the family put in this business. It is a family business, ran for the past 55 years by Signiore Cattini. Yes, 55 years since the place opened.

Don't be surprised if you don't need a menu - they'll bring you all the antipasto and primi piati you need. Go for the Cappeletti in Brodo, you must. Try some tortellini (the ones with spinach-ricotta-parmigianno or the pumpkin-prosciutto-veggies fillings) - you really must.

The experience of being served the secondi is heartwarming and truly special. You'll see an old, a little hunchbacked gentlemen, pushing around a trolly of goodies and seriving prople around. That's Signiore Cattini. He'll open up his trolley and you'll have to choose from rabbit, poultry (chicken, duc, etc), game (if you're there on the right day), beef, pork, sausages, prosciutto - either grilled, baked or boiled. With the side-dish, of course, of either mashed or baked potatoes.

It's humbling and special to be served by a smiling 5 foot, 80+ yr old, gentleman whose sole purpose in his "career" was to make food so delicious so the people will return.

Deserts are heaven - we tried three different ones, each superb. Best Zuppa Inglese I've ever had in my life.

You must visit Cattini at least once - it's a rare place where you can enjoy a bite of what the Italian cuisine once was before cooking shows, cooking channels and superstar cooks were around to tell us what food should be like.

Tip: they make their own traditional balsamico (20+ yr vintages) and have it on the table for you to help yourself. Try it - it's great. They don't sell it, sadly, because it's not their main business.

A must & great authentic Italian experience: 9.40 out of 10.00

This cozy restaurant, nicely located in the outskirts of Reggio Emilia, is a very typical example of a family-run italian place. The cuisine relies on the staples of local food: prosciutto, Parmiggiano-Reggiano, home-made pasta, meat (veal, pork, chicken, rabbit among the others).
The service is efficient and very friendly and the atmosphere is just lovely; simple, traditional, intimate and cozy in the inside and with a nice yard outside. All this comes with a convenient price; for a complete meal with wine and coffee we spent just 30 euros per person.
I would strongly recommend it if you are a family and if you want to have a taste of the "slow-Italy" that resists the wind of modernity.
NB: do not get there too late; the kitchen closes soon after 2 PM...

This restaurant was recommended to us after touring a local Balsamic Vinegar producer. They had called ahead and reserved a reservation, but my wife and I got lost and arrived right after they had closed for lunch. (NOTE - be sure to ask for a drawn map of how to find the restaurant.) We started to get back into the car to leave when they insisted that we stay and eat. They reopened their kitchen and served us a full four course meal! The food was excellent and my wife and I agreed that the Tortelli soup was the best we had in all of Italy! The owners were extremely gracious - they talked to us in English (probably after realizing that our Italian was terrible and very limited) and never rushed us throughout the time we spent there. I would HIGHLY recommend a stop at the Ristorante Cattini and that you seek it out if in the area!
