Just come back from a fantastic fortnight in Spain - the first week was spent in this great apartment in San Jose. An easy 30-40 minute drive from Almeria airport, with some great views of Cabo da Gata. San Jose is a lovely little town, with everything you need. (choice of reasonably sized supermarkets, which are even open on Sundays. Suma - orange one at the back of the town, 10 min walk, had the best choice). La Luz is a large, light, airy, comfortable apartment and comes with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge, good Wi-Fi connection and a large balcony with a fantastic view. It had everything that we needed. All perfect! Nina responded quickly to our initial enquiry and the whole booking was efficient and friendly from start to finish. Highly recommended! She manages several properties in the area - so she's bound to have one that suits you, and she is very knowledgeable about the area and keen to help.
Highlights included: going to lots of lovely (safe, sandy) beaches, many of which are within a 15-20 minute drive, snorkelling in clear water, visiting the spaghetti western film locations (Los Albaricoques is a must for the film buff), seeing flamingos, visiting Fort Bravo on the way up to our second holiday location (see separate review for Fort Bravo - absolutely brilliant day out!)
Our tips - take a camera and lots of batteries, as you will want to take lots of pictures of the stunning volcanic scenery; binoculars to see the variety of birds on the salt marshes; spaghetti western film trilogy on DVD; spaghetti western film music on CD for the car! Comfortable walking shoes and snorkelling gear - including shoes to swim in as there are lots and lots of sea urchins. Possibly a wet suit as well, if going in the spring as the water was still a bit cold!
Car hire - we used 'costacoches rentacar' - very quick easy pick up in Almeria airport car park (5% discount if paying in cash), friendly staff and good communication. Get a reasonable car to deal with hills and non-tarmac roads. We paid 330 euros for two weeks.
Nina is an agent for Goldcar, so you can arrange car hire that way instead.
Would love to go back again in the early summer next year for scuba diving and horse riding. The scuba places were still closed for the season, and I'd left it too late to book a ride - the horses are kept at the hotel (Cortijo El Sotillo) where they filmed the opening scene from A Fistful of Dollars - how cool is that?!)
Can't recommend this apartment and Nina's service highly enough!
