Riverton Lakes & House is situated about 6 miles from Barnstaple. It has three lakes for anglers - and by all accounts it is very popular. There are also three holiday cottages, Mole Cottage being the smallest.
The cottage comprises two bedrooms, one en-suite, and the other with an en-suite cloakroom, and a kitchen/dining/living room. The whole cottage is well-furnished, and in excellent order. A modern kitchen with integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, properly equipped with small electrical appliances and cooking equipment. There is a satellite TV with a DVD player. There is Internet access via a wireless connection - don't expect great download speeds, it is a rural area.
Outside the cottage is a small patio within a small garden area looking onto a large grassed area bounded on the North side by a stream. The grounds are all magnificent, especially at Springtime. If you like wildlife then you can expect to see a wide range of birds - tits, robins, wrens, finches, nuthatches, blackbirds, thrushes, tree creepers, dippers, herons, woodpeckers, buzzards, ducks, etc. - and maybe otters, squirrels and other small animals.
The owners, the Robinson's - Jackie & Carl, are very welcoming, helpful and, as far as practicable, accommodating. They take great care to ensure that everything is as it should be and we haven't been disappointed in this.
It takes about 5 minutes to reach the North Devon Link Road, A361, and as Barnstaple is the hub town for the area all parts of the coast are easily accessible by car. Exeter is about 60 minutes away either by train or car. Tiverton Parkway rail station is about 35 minutes by car if travelling to Taunton, Bristol or beyond.
For walking & cycling enthusiasts there is the Tarka Trail, much of which is suitable for all types of walker. The South West Coastal Path in North Devon is more of a challenge but enjoys stunning clifftop views. We have done a lot of walking in our stay, both coastal and inland, and the variety is endless - Rivers Taw and Torridge, Braunton Burrows, Arlington, Appledore/Westward Ho!, Clovelly, Hartland Point, Great Torrington and more to enjoy. And Exmoor is only a short drive away!
Nearest pub, the Jack Russell, is nearly two miles from the cottage. Travel a bit further afield and you can also enjoy a drink & meal at The Stag's Head, Filleigh, The Bell, Chittlehampton, The New Inn, Goodleigh, the Chichester Arms, Bishop's Tawton, etc.
Barnstaple has the usual quota of national chain eateries such as Pizza Express, but for good local fish then Geoff Morton's Fatbelly Fred's is a fish restaurant to try unusual types of fish, such as weaver, cuckoo wrasse, stone bass, as well as the more common fish dishes.
We greatly enjoyed our 6 month winter let at Mole Cottage, a real haven of peace and quiet, but not far away from anywhere else in North Devon.
