Once again I am back staying at the Espiritu..Formally the Apex hotel in the middle of Santo. They are currently refurbishing the Hotel, but importantly its still Simon, Raymond and the staff that make your stay very welcome. Confy beds, clean and quiet with wifi acces...and once again a late check which is very muchg appreciated!!
The Ocean King Restaurant attached is also VERY GOOD as well as the French Restaurant 1 min walk fron the hotel
Thanks again guys and keep up the good work

Paul

This establishment is right in the main Street of Luganville; I'll suggest that it is more centrally located than the main business hotel, the Hotel Santo, whilst emphasising that the main street of Luganville is not that long...

I stayed in what was styled a "Deluxe Double Air Con" room. These are situated on the second floor with private balconies, and present a birds-eye view of town. The double bed was comfortable, the air con was comfortably quiet, worked well and came with a remote. Other inclusions are in-room tea and coffee facilities, a generously sized bar 'fridge, TV and DVD player. The room was spacious, the bathroom not quite so, but comfortably sized nonetheless. No hot water to the bathroom basin, but the shower cord was long enough to reach the basin, to fill for your correspondent's daily hot-water shave. Speaking of hot water, there was gobs of it, at high pressure, never faltering. A light breakfast of cereal, fruit, tea and coffee was included in my package, as well as WIFI Internet and in-house movies. Complimentary use of snorkelling gear and golf clubs are also advertised as inclusions.

During my stay, I thought the establishment was very clean and well maintained. The proprietors appear keen to give good service - I was after some tours and mine host was only too pleased to not only call up a couple of local tour guides, but to also point out alternatives: "Wrecks to Rainforest" next door to the hotel, for example.

On the aspect of service, during the six days I was staying there my television expired and the water supply to my bathroom basin and loo dried up. Both times, it was only minutes before the genial service chap attended and remedied. In the latter case it was in the early evening and he had to be extracted from somewhere in town, demonstrating to me a good service philosophy.

There's no swimming pool, if that's one of your requirements. Also, no lifts, so if up and down two flights of stairs have you huffen' and puffen', you may be more comfortable at a lower level, albeit without a private balcony. My in-room safe didn't have batteries, and needed to be operated with the supplied auxiliary key; somewhat unusual!

The hotel charges 5% credit card surcharge, within the Vanuatu range which appears to be about 3% to 6%. It was slightly cheaper for me to book through wotif.com than through the hotel directly because of the surcharge.

Luganville town only presents about about four or so eating establishments that stay open for evening dining. The hotel's in-house restaurant, "Ocean King Cafe and Restaurant" is one of them. No complaints here - I patronised it regularly during my stay and was quite pleased with the menu; predominately Asian, but also presenting a quite reasonable selection of seafood and western dishes. It's closed Wednesdays.

In short: A clean and comfortable 3 to 3½ star establishment. Attentive and pleasant management and staff, convenient central location for exploring Luganville and surrounds.

We stayed 4 nights in August at the Apex Garden Hotel.
Simon and his brother were more than helpful and friendly! they gave us heaps of tips and ideas of what to do in Santo. we were a group of 6 divers and so we were more than happy to have facilities to wash and hang our dive gear after each day.
the hotel in centrally located in Luganville, just a quick walk to everything, 5 min from the 24h market... It has a independently managed restaurant attached and so really convenient for dinners...
I particularly appreciated the fresh flowers in the hall everyday... and more than appreciated the fact that they allow us to leave our dive gear there while we went on a 2 nights trek... the little plus that makes it great... So nice of you guys!
Will come back there for sure.

We stayed here during the Easter break and were in Luganville for the primary purpose of diving the Coolidge.

Accommodation:
The hotel is centrally located on the main street of Luganville, with most places a quick walk around from the hotel. The rooms are basic but clean, have a safe and TV (with dvd player). The toilet is a bit tiny. The room we had was overlooking the front main street of Luganville and had a big balcony, which was great for sitting in the evenings and also drying our wet clothes from diving :). Downstairs reception also has a good selection of DVD's - most were very recent movies (1-2 months recent) - we were happily surprised.

Diving:
Alan Powers is just 50m up the road from this hotel and was very convenient as we could head home to have hot showers in between our morning and afternoon dives, without needing to wait for a drop-off or pick-up. Simon (owner) at the front desk is also very helpful and can organise tours for you to champagne beach and the blue holes.

Food:
There is a great asian restaurant just downstairs - Ocean King (different owners) that does very good seafood. Le Jardins (french restaurant) is also just 50m down the road and there are plenty of supermarkets just around the corner for any food and other supplies. Deco Stop is also a short walk up the hill - so there are plenty of food options all around. We

Amenities:
There is free wireless available at the hotel!

Bottom-line: This is no resort facility but the location from Alan Powers dive store and food options around make this a decent and cheap option in Luganville for divers.

Room Tip: Top floor - double bedroom with a balcony

We stayed 8 nights at the Apex Hotel in the centre of Luganville and were very happy with our choice.

The Apex hotel is a new modern built hotel right in the centre of town, so easy to find. It has a restaurant attached to it, particularly handy for breakfast.

The rooms were clean and simple and well priced. We went for Deluxe on the top floor which had a balcony. This over looked the road which was noisy first thing in the morning. I checked out the Superior rooms on the first floor, these had no balcony, but overlooked the back of the hotel, so i’m sure they would be quieter. Slightly smaller in room size, but other than that not much difference to Deluxe (except the balcony).

Also checked out the single rooms (very spacious) and the family rooms (not bad size but might be a struggle with lots of suitcases)

We got a great deal on Wotif, which included free airport transfers, so worth checking out.

The beds were very comfortable, the air-conditioning was quiet and effective, and there was also a fan.

The free wi-fi internet (if you have your own laptop) was reasonably fast and reliable.

There was also a TV (with one channel only, channel 9 i think from Australia), fridge and a kettle.

Room was simply furnished, with just a bed side cabinet, and a small table, above which was a hanging rail for clothes.

Bathroom was small ish but totally workable, clean, powerful and hot shower.

Rooms were cleaned everyday. Clean towels provided when asked for (to preserve water usage)

Simon the manager, was very helpful and so easy to get information from as he is Australian so obviously fluent English, but also knows the area well.

The Apex is close to the small choice of restaurants in Luganville. We would rather have this, then stuck on a posh resort with no choice but to pay their very high prices in the same restaurant every night.

Restaurants were excellent, have reviewed Deco Stop, Le Jardin des Saveurs, and Beach Front as separate reviews.

The Apex hotel is also one of the few places (maybe only??!!) that does car hire.

Do not expect Avis / Hertz.

We paid 8500 vatu, (then 10% off i think for being a customer at the hotel) for a fairly old, creaky car with a tape deck (!) which would be considered a good quality car on the island, but barely road worthy to us. It did somehow manage to get us around the island with no troubles, but we were a bit shocked at the price of car hire and what you got for your money.

Santo in general was much more expensive then we ever thought.

Luxury hi-end priced resorts for a developing country.

We are so glad that we stayed in the clean, cheap, modern, air-con basic comfort of Apex, and then spent the days going to all the over-priced posh resorts and using all their facilities. Something openly welcomed by the resorts, so a great way of doing a holiday in Santo!

Room Tip: Restaurant is closed on Wednesdays

Thanks for the positive review Claire! Im glad Stuart and youself enjoyed your stay with us. It was definitely a pleasure having you guys.

I promise I will phase out our vehicles that have reached their 3 year rental period and will be introducing a new vehicle range that is a lot more suitable, but rest assured all our vehicles are no older than 3 years.

Thanks again guys.
