I did this trip and it was great. you take a boat, then a coach, then another boat. the crew handles everything. the scenery is great, even when it rains (dress accordingly). the boat is smaller than some other tours, which is a huge plus. this was my favorite activity in the South Island. Mandy will help you with all arrangements! Thx, Mandy!!

Milford Sound is an amazing place. We choose a smaller company that provided a coach transfer to and from Te Anua, and cruised on one of the smaller boats. Less crowded, and always able to get good viewing/photo position. The crew on the boat was very professional and informative. Dolphins a highlight, and lucky to have snow on mountain tops.
Coach driver was also excellent, both driving and for local knowledge and many photo stops. Gunns camp interesting.

My wife and I (age 65) booked this overnight cruise in early March based on research here and conferring with our travel agent. We purposely chose Doubtful Sound over Milford because it was described as less crowded, which appeared to be the case. We chose Fiordland Expeditions over the larger alternative in order to get a more intimate experience--good call.
Thanks to the crew (Mandy on land, Richard, Sasha, Emma and Ellie on board) we had a wonderful experience. Weather was perfect, which we preferred to the waterfalls-in-the-rain. The vessel and the experience were as described by other reviewers, so won't repeat that here. No, this is not a Disney luxury cruise, but it was very much as described. We were quite comfortable in our bunks overnight and in sharing meals and activities with the other guests.
Strongly recommend this if you have time for an overnight (if not, suggest you make time!).

We booked the overnight Doubtful Sound tour - and were so glad we did as it was undoubtedly one of the highlights our entire 16-day trip to NZ.

The size of the boat - 12 passengers + 3 crew - provided an intimate, casual and engaging 24+ hours. The crew, led by Captain Dave and supported by Emma and Ellie (sp?), used humor, cajoling and simple hard work to cement the diverse group of passengers and provide an outstanding experience. We were amazed at the level of engagement, energy and work ethic of the captain and crew. The narrative during the trip, the lobster catch, the fishing attempts, star-gazing, kayaking, swimming and relaxing were delivered with a laid-back sense of humor that was supported by the continual work, work, work of the crew.

It was an awesome experience that exceeded our expectations. WELL DONE!!

As if the grandeur of Doubtful Sound wasn't enough, our overnight with Fiordland Expeditions made it an epic experience. Despite the fact that we did not have stellar weather, the staff made sure we were able to kayak & fish. We thought the spear fishing and lobster catching might be hokey, but it turned out to be delicious fun. Thanks Dave, Sasha, Ellie and Cameron!
