This establishment, which calls itself a “resort” (presumably because it sounds more fashionable and may allow for a price hike) is located in the middle of nowhere in the wonderful Ogliastra mountainous area of Sardinia (read: no cell phone signal at all, you’ll have to resort to emails via the reasonably fast WiFi network of the "resort"). It features a very large and nice pool and a spa (hence the “resort” claim, probably).

Through some regulatory quirk, fluke or generosity, it’s got 4 stars but doesn’t truly deserve them. Even Italian stars.

First, there is no elevator to reach the first-floor rooms, be ready to carry your heavy luggage if you're not on the ground floor. The rooms are reasonably sized and nicely appointed (our parquet floor showed several dangerously disjointed blades, though), the beds are firm and good (but the pillows are scarce and terribly flat), the bathrooms are OK but we found a dirty, stained washbasin glass in ours —not a pretty welcoming sight.

And the shower (cabin rather small) drain was almost blocked... usual hotel stuff, but definitely not 4-star stuff. Still on the bathroom chapter, you will look for the Kleenex dispenser but won’t find it, and even more annoying, there is absolutely no shelf space whatsoever to set your things, bottles and little accessories. VERY annoying.

Do you feel adventurous? Well, good news, because there are no lights at all if you need to go back to the parking lot at night to retrieve something from your car!

After a long and jot journey, you feel ready to "stay at home" and sample the delicacies the chef must have on offer in the "resort's" restaurant. All right, the large dining room painted bright orange reminds you a bit of those Club Med dining rooms of the late seventies. Maybe the fact that they only have enormous tables for six people (not the best layout for couples...) adds something to that reminiscent feeling... or maybe it's the wiring dangling from the ceiling here and there (see photo)? All right, the furniture does not really look top echelon (and our table did shake and rock a bit), nor does the tableware. But what matter most is the food, right? And in that department, surely...

You spot a yummy-looking meat dish tu be the centerpiece of your dinner... but alas...! they don't have any left! "Mi dispiace", like the waiter said apologetically. Well, that's a disappointment (4 stars, remember?), but it can happen —although it is quite early in the evening. How about that other meat dish? That would do nicely too. Aaargh! The waiter looks pained beyond measure: there isn't any left of that one either...! Two dishes out of 6 are unavailable...!

At this point, I have to give credit to the waiter who, having seen my wife pick unerringly the two unavailable dishes, took the initiative of pointing out himself a pasta dish which was also not available, in an attempt at sort of preempting the letdown. But by then, we were laughing about it, as there was nothing left to do.

We were not through yet, though: first, it look an inordinately long time for our meal to be served, AND when my own dish arrived... it was cold and I had to send it back! I will not dwell on the unsavory look of the meat (see photos and judge for yourselves), nor on the fact that the (undercooked) French fries still had their skin on... After all, this is a 4-star "resort", ain't it?

After that, we did not feel like sampling dessert and went back to our room right away. At least, we could make good tea there, and had a stash of delicious sweets to pick from if needed.

The next morning, as early as 8:15, the cleaning personnel is at work in the inner courtyard onto which your room windows open, energetically brushing steps, filling up big plastic buckets with water and splashing them on the tiled floor, and in general making such a ruckus that trying to keep sleeping for just a little longer is impossible. So, you get up and go to the breakfast room, where the selection is rather meager: two kinds of ham, one salami, cold hard boiled eggs, nothing hot to eat. Yoghurt, fruit, cakes, Italian croissants and jams. Nothing too fancy on that side either. Good, mark you, but once again: not 4 stars.

And they’re cheap on replenishing the bathroom supplies, too: when we came back in the evening, there was only one little bottle of shower gel, clearly not enough to shower two people...! Luckily, I had gotten a feel for the place and anticipated this: I had kept an extra bottle from the previous day, but... did you say 4 stars?

Oh, and the dirty and smeared wash basin glass we brought to Reception on evening number 1 was not replaced by evening 2, and several signs showed that our bathroom had been only VERY cursorily cleansed, if at all. And they also forgot to give us two new transparent plastic glasses. Decidedly not good.

In summary, the location is great, the pool is great, the rooms are acceptable size-wise, the WiFi is OK, but all the rest is mediocre, if not downright unacceptable (including the holier-than-thou treatment you get from most of the people at Reception), and definitely not worth the 4 stars, nor the prices they're asking.

One final word: it happens more and more often that hotel and restaurant owners and/or managers see fit to respond to reviews posted by their clients. Just remember, when you read those responses, that such owners/managers have a vested interest in selling you their services, where I have no vested interest whatsoever in expressing the personal and objective viewpoints expressed in this review.

Gentilissimo Blue_439 Lyon,

Cordiali saluti

Dear Blue_439 Lyon,

We thank you for sharing your personal experience with other users, every opinion is for us reason for improvement and growth, but we want to clarify that:
- You considered our resort not to be worthy to a four-star rating, even specifying ... "even the Italian ones". Very offensive statement for all tourist facilities that carry out their activities in our country.

- You claimed to do an early CHECK IN at 10.00, which is the hour of CHECK OUT, pressing and harassing the reception staff and staff engaged in cleaning the room assigned to you, creating immediately a climate of tension that caused the only oversight in the rearrangement of the room that should normally have occupied starting at 16. Is this your thanks for having granted you this privilege?

-The rooms do not have parquet, as you have defined, but a table made of larch wood called "su stathu", handcrafted, as well as all the Sardinian style furnishings. There is nothing dangerously disjointed, but the normality of a pose that requires the wood to breathe.
Yes, dear guest, because beyond the unimportant details that you highlighted, you failed to comment on the most beautiful nature can offer, which you defined nothingness, combined with our resort.
Meanwhile, we are an "ECOLABEL" Hotel inserted in a naturalistic context of value, striving to protect the environment.

Every day we serve fresh and local foods as specified in the menu that you did not notice because you are busy on photographing any defects such as the electric wire of the chandelier. Concept well explained in the following phrase: "The staff of the Hotel Orlando believes in the genuineness, in tradition, in culture and therefore in the value of the products of our land of Ogliastra. For that reason, we propose you a “kilometre zero” menu, which means something very simple: what arrives in your table has not travelled long distances in a cold store, but comes directly from local producers. Therefore, we can guarantee you a fresh product and contribute to reduce the pollution, inexorably connected to the transport of goods. Allow yourself any curiosity without limits. We will pleased to explain you every detail of what is on your plate”

If the raw materials do not satisfy us fully, we prefer to say to the guest "unavailable", rather than serving products that do not satisfy our standard. We chose to revive the ancient, simple and genuine cuisine, consisting of biological products like vegetables that come directly from our garden. Certainly not from Club Med, to which we have approached... Bright colors are the exact reproductions of those you can found in the old houses of almost seventy years ago in the villages of Gairo and Osini that we invite you to visit.

What about our variety in breakfast, appreciated and praised by all guests, consisting of assorted meats, local cheeses, artisanal jams, fruit, eggs, cakes baked every morning, but also toast, omelette etc

We also allowed ourselves to “take a trip” in your repertoire of reviews, we found several "copy and paste", we found that you have a bad relationship with heavy suitcases ... (fortunately you had a room in the ground floor), that you are an expert photographer and an art lover...and that you are a light sleeper. Excellent curriculum for one who has only photographed some dishes and an electric cable ... but has not been able to appreciate and notice all the art that surrounded him and that makes our resort unique in its kind.... The works of important artists such as Liliana Cano, Antonio Corriga, Silecchia left you indifferent ... By the way, the cable that you photographed is the enhancement of a light that awaits an important chandelier that will be handcrafted.
You defined our Villeroy & Boch dishes not of a high standard, excuse us, what do you think is high level? De gustibus non est disputandum!

We take note that you will no longer be among our guests, considering that you don’t WANTED to grasped and you have not been able to appreciate the beauty and the uniqueness of our RESORT.

Best regards

A delightful brief, but fortunate stay to witness the election of the Sardinian Miss Italy candidate. The hotel is located in an enchanting virgin forest, with numerous excursion possibilites and is ideal for nature lovers.
Exquisitely maintained and furnished with a refined Sardinian flavour including many extraordinary local works of art. Excellent cuisine, based on quality Sardinia products, which instill good chances of longevity, for which this area, Villagrande Strisaili, is famous for. I will most certainly return again.

Room tip: The view over the pool is good

I certainly do not recommend this hotel.

First of all it is impossible to find the hotel with navigation. If you are international travelers travelling with a navigation tool, it is impossible to find this hotel. We have even found hotels in the most difficult places to find, but it is the first time we couldn't find a hotel. Because the official address and the real one do not match. When you call the reception for help, the receptionist does not know English so cannot describe how to go there. It was nearly 2 am t night and we were desperately circling near the official address, then the carabinieri (local guards) were kind enough to drive us there (it was impossible to find it by someone telling you, they need to drive you literally).

Second the bathroom is awful, bathtub and sink are filling with water while you are having a shower or washing something.

Third there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms. Even in the reception it works poorly.

No need to lose time is this weird hotel.

Dear ImgeKS,

Every stay at any hotel should be marked by a deep feeling of well-being: we understand that in his case expectations have been overturned and therefore we deeply apologize.
In the same way we regret that you did not find the hotel right in the beautiful Santa Barbara forest 500 meters from the provincial road and just minutes from Villagrande Strisaili. The navigator very often misses and sorry that maybe he took you to Santa Barbara Street rather than the Santa Barbara woods !!!
WI FI is present in all rooms, public areas and outdoor areas. To enable it, you must ask for the password.
We hope we can still have it among our guests and send you our best regards.

Some friendly advise for the people like us that are booking based on website marketing......Do not book here. Its dead in May and so are the nearby villages. We came from Palau, for one night, to find the upgraded room we paid for was facing another room- NO VIEW - just the opposite room/concrete- when most other rooms are facing the pool or mountains. Best part- no other rooms were even occupied!!!! Spa was also closed. No mention of this when booking despite it being a SPA resort. Reception staff simply shrugged her shoulders when i asked why we theres nothing to state that? (We wouldnt have bothered coming here otherwise) Didn't give two hoots we travelled over 180km to get here. (En-route somewhere but thats by the by - still went way out of our way) No recommendations of what we could do as the place was deserted, not a soul in site. We then got less and less helpful info from reception when we asked her where we could go. May be different in peak season. Either way, still quick to take your money but not tell you what they cannot offer you. Its a suprise when you get there ps- they dont serve between 10am and 7.30pm and good luck finding somewhere open for lunch thats half decent. Stay in the tourist areas, venturing here is not worth it unless you want to be completly deserted. Also no mobile phone service- your only relying on wifi which doesnt go any further than the reception doors. The place is like a prison.

Dear Ospite,
We are sorry to read its review: Recently Sardinia has experienced an exceptional wave of bad weather and at the same time our SPA was closed for maintenance. A business that we imagine has not only influenced the quality of his stay. We apologize for failing to meet his expectations, but when carrying out maintenance work we have the duty to preserve the safety of our guests. That was why he was not allowed to access the SPA: although apparently it was all in order, controls were needed to make sure that no risk was corrected.
We remain at your disposal for any further constructive comparison and we are still waiting for our guests.
