We had a wonderful stay at Ellerton bungalow. The old house is beautiful and really interesting, and the view from the valley house veranda is stunning. The food was good but the real treat is having free drinks (soft and alcoholic) all day, served by the very polite and attentive staff. The hotel owners were very friendly and always happy to have a chat and make you feel at home.

While some of the upholstery felt a bit tired, our room in the valley house was amazing - very tall ceilings and some beautiful furnishings, along with a very spacious bathroom. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed our days of lazing by the pool and playing table tennis and chess - a perfect retreat regardless of the sometimes not-so-great weather.

All in all we had a fantastic stay and we would highly recommend Ellerton to anyone travelling to Kandy but looking for a more peaceful and off-the-beaten-track hotel, away from the hustle and bustle. Just be prepared for a rather lengthy and windy ride up the hill!

Dear Julia N,
Thank you for your review on Ellerton!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us as everything we do at Ellerton is with the purpose of making our guests feel comfortable and cared for. I was in Kandy earlier today but couldn't wait to run back to the serene calm of Ellerton.

Yes, I agree that some of the upholstry needs changing and this is on our list of priorities. On the other hand we have to be very
careful especially when renewing the furnishings ( upholstery) in the main house as it could spoil the "traditional" estate bungalow feel. Just now a lot of ideas are being thrown around and I am sure we will find suitable material very soon.

Best regards,
Iromi and Luca Poloni

There are only 5 or 6 rooms at the Ellerton, so it is very intimate. I love it. The free drinks and generally good standard of cooking are a bonus to the perfect hilltop setting. You do need to be aware that it is some 30 minutes from Peredeniya and 45 from Kandy. My only criticism is that the rooms could do with either insect screens or aircon and preferably both. The bedding is also a bit tired. I have no doubt however that the new owners, who are charming, will rectify this over the next few months.

Dear Defke2014,

Thank you for your review on Ellerton!

Reviews such as yours which contain constructive suggestions are a bonus. We took over Ellerton on the 1st of March and although it is a well run business, we are keenly aware that upgrades to certain areas of the hotel is indeed required; bedding being high on the list. It would be our pleasure to receive you at Ellerton once again.

Best regards,
Iromi Poloni

Although the new proprietors had been there less that two weeks everything was running very smoothly and both they and all their staff team were most helpful and approachable. The food was excellent, the rooms comfortable and well appointed,

and the old planter’s bungalow ambience beautifully preserved. There is a lovely garden and an infinity pool as well as any number of books to read. Unusually there are several local walks and bike rides which unfortunately we did not have the time to enjoy. Thoroughly recommended

Dear Harry, thank you for your positive review!

Yes, today we complete the first fortnight as new owners of Ellerton!
The previous owners; Richard and Carry Goode left the property/business in excellent conditions, and so all we have to do is to carry on. There will be some upgrades but these will not in any way change the warn and pleasing atmosphere which is so special to Ellerton.

We had a two night stay at Ellerton and used it as our base to explore Kandy. It’s only a half hour drive to the middle of Kandy and the peaceful location is a welcome refuge from the bustle and heat of the town. As other reviewers have noted, there is no A/C in the rooms but the nights are cool and breezy enough for this not to be an issue at all. We had a valley room which was convenient for the pool; clean, comfortable with an attractive bathroom. Lovely views from parts of the property. Very warm welcome from accommodating staff. The food was good, both the sandwich lunches and dinners. The chance to have wine by the glass is quite unusual in Sri Lanka hotels and appreciated. We understand from a fellow guest that the place was about to change hands so hope it maintains its charm in the future. Overall, good value.

Room Tip: Garden or valley room

A warm welcome awaits at this lovely colonial property set amid beautiful gardens. We stayed in the main house in a very large room (curtained off bath/shower in the bedroom was interesting!). It did seem a little tired though. Meals were lovely and freshly cooked by the in-house chef but were possibly more costly than other places. However, freshly prepared food is worth paying for and the cost of drinks was included. The staff were delightful and let’s hope the new owners can maintain the high standards set by the Goodes.

Room Tip: Garden room would be worth asking for.

Dear Lola G, thank you for your review and I apologise for not having replied sooner!

My husband Luca and I took over Ellerton from Goodes on the 1st of March and therefore have just completed the first 10 days as new owners. Yes, Richard and Cary Goode had set the bar very high. But, as you rightly point out, the place is indeed a little tired and we have already set about renewing certain aspects, but being mindful of not destroying the charm and cosy atmosphere which is special to Ellerton. "Trendy" is not what we are looking for.

Yes, the curtained off bath/shower in the room is quirky, but the structural changes which would have resulted in incorporating a bath within the existing toilette was problematic in a house which is over 100 years old. But sometime in the future we will be getting a structural engineer to examine the possibility.

Also, thank you for your compliments on the meals. Over 90% of the raw materials we use is fresh, local and seasonal.

Best regards,
Iromi Poloni
