I have travelled to Penang many times for business, and after staying at two other hotels, found the Equatorial Hotel to be the best option. Its in a quiet location, has a lot of natural light, and the best staff - courteous and efficient. While I normally prefer the "back" or business wing, even the main hotel has excellent rooms. The Chinese restaurant is great for a quiet meal or a large team dinner, as is the cafe which has a sumptuous buffet. I have used the hotel car service for pick-up and drop off right around the island.

We had a perfect stay during 4 nights in this hotel. The Executive Room we received instead of a Standard Room (and without any extra to be paid) was brand new, very large, perfectly clean and with a magnificent view. The staff was very helpful and attentive, always smiling and available to inform us. The breakfast was excellent, with a large choice of different type of kitchen. The garden and the swimming pool are perfectly clean and very well maintained. We used every day the shuttle going to the center of Georgetown - always punctual ! perfect ! We can't enough use the word 'perfect' to describe our stay...
We were very happy to discover the chain of hotels Equatorial in Malaysia and will always choose to book our stay in an Equatorial Hotel !! Thank you for everything !!!

my daughter had come from germany to malaysia for a short holiday, each time she comes she likes to visit penang, its about a four hour drive from Kuala lumpur. We atayed at the equatorial hotel for no special reason, there was a good deal on groupon thats how we stayed there. The atmosphere in the hotel is quite nice , the small garden and a mini stream flowing through makes a nice place to go for a mini stroll, the swimming pool is nothing much, the adjoining jacuzzi was without water and the back portion of the swimming pool where i presume the bar used to be was dark and gloomy,The staff of the hotel needs surely more training how to serve guests and general mannerism, the service is very slow, we waited about 20 min before a waiter came to take our orders, 10 min. later another waiter came to ask as about our order, the first waiter was busy with a function and had forgotten about us, well breakfast was a real disappointment, again staff that did no know what to do, the food was overall looked unappetizing and tasted not good at all. But i must say the room we stayed in (506 ) was very good it was spacious and we had a good view from the balcony onto penang brigde, at night it was quiet, the bathroom was well equipped with soaps, shampoos etc,The internet connection was bad eventhough we stayed in a business wing room, This hotel is surely not for holiday makers since there is actually nothing around this hotel. we were lucky to drive around since we had our car, so we discovered a hidden historical treasure hidden away in the jungle surrounded batu maung, here we found a war museum that was actually a fortress in the 1930 build by the british, it was something so fantastic to visit and was for sure a great enrichment. the side was forgotten by the locals for almost 70 years, the jungle kept the secret, then while building a new housing area this fortress was discovered. i will not go much into detail, who ever likes history should go and visit for themselves, all artifacts buildings ,shelters, tunnels and so on is all kept in a good state.
Further we visitted the penang peranakan mansion , which was a typical home of the baba nonyas here we were introduced to the lavish lifestyle of the baba nonyas in the 19th century, a place must see when in penang

Room Tip: 506 was a good room to stay in it had a great view and was quiet, located in the business wing

My family and I stayed at the Equatorial for three days to cross over from Penang to Jakarta. I wasn't expecting much when I heard about it, but as soon as I walked into the hotel lobby, I was blown away. The staff immediately greeted me, sparking up a conversation which kept me engaged while my parents booked a room. We entered the room after a bit of a hassle trying to use the internet special price. It was large and spacious with a few good channels. The bathroom was good, with clean tiles and a big shower space. The hotel has about fourteen floors high, which didn't worry me, but if you are a bit acrophobic you may want to avoid standing out on the balcony. Internet acess was a pain, charging seventeen ringgit for one hour, but it was expected from a hotel like this. When we stayed, staff claimed it was a five star hotel, and the facilities which it showcases proves just that. There was a large gym and jacuzzi along with a hot sauna where you can dry off in. The pool is large, some of it going into a cave which stretches over the pool itself. There are seperate kiddy pools for kids of all ages and the swimming pool is great for practicing your swimming. The restaurants were quite expensive and had limited meals to choose from the menu. There are absolutely NO restaurants around, but there is a shuttle bus which drives to the main shopping malls in the area. Despite having some cons, the Equatorial is an great place to stay for a short period of time (even know I wanted to stay for longer).

This was a very quick 2 day business trip and the company I was visiting booked me into this as it was close to the industrial zone. However, staff attitude was abrupt bordering on rude, and it is a long way from the city and shopping, even longer in the terrible traffic jams. Not close to restaurants and the food is expensive and not as good as even the many cheap restaurants that serve really good seafood in local area. I would prefer something in the downtown next time, or one of the many hotels by the seaside.

Room Tip: Try another hotel in the city as this one is very far out and isolated
