This is a fantastic house. The photos do not do it justice. The house has recently been lovingly restored by it's owners and they have done a lovely and thorough job.
The upstairs has three bedrooms, one with a large really luxurious bathroom attached. The two others are a large double room and a small room with two single beds - all equally comfortable. These two rooms share another beautiful bathroom with a bath and a shower. There are two comfortable sofas upstairs on the landing seating areas. Everything spic and span.
Downstairs there are several rooms - a further bedroom, a library, dining room, sitting room, kitchen and conservatory. Lovely brand new kitchen. Rooms all very clean and decorated comfortably in period of the house. There are a further shower room and loo tucked into this floor.
The owners John and Claire also offered to do an evening meal for us for an extra cost. My son has coeliac disease so needed to be sure his food was gluten free. Claire made us a delicious Beef bourginon with mash and veggies and a lovely tart for dessert. She made sure everything was gluten free and provided a separate dessert for him.
John has an extensive knowledge of WW1 and the house is full of medals, pictures and artifacts from the war. There is a large Library of books (in English) on the war in the Library.
There is also a fascinating german bunker/ escape route under the house that John has excavated and you can see it through a floor window in the living room.
All in all I highly recommend this house and it is within walking distance to many of the WW1 memorial sights and battlefields.
Excellent. Couldn't have wished for a better stay. Guillemont Halt has been restored to a superb finish. Lovely comfortable beds, excellent facilities. Home made cooking is truly outstanding and is very plentiful. I can't recommend the food enough. Great place to stay and John is a friendly, honest man.
I have just come back from a very enjoyable stay at Guillemont Halt. The house has recently been refurbished to a very high level. We stayed in the master bedroom with en suite which was perfect! We chose to have breakfast and evening meal prepared for us by Claire which was delicious! Caring for our every need. In the day we went on several guided tours by John, he has a great knowledge of the area taking us to various memorials and visiting local towns (Claire even prepared us a packed lunch!) John and Claire are very welcoming, making sure we had an enjoyable time. I would definitely recommend this place particularly to a group of people as it caters for up to 11 guests! We will definitely be going back again in the very near future!
Perfectly located base for exploring the Somme battlefields, situated in a quiet village midway between Bapaume and Albert.
The accommodation is great for groups, whether a large family or a group of friends. There are bedrooms well equipped and a mixture of singles, doubles and triples, and the bathrooms immaculate. The kitchen is modern and similarly very well supplied with both cooking equipment and tableware
Even in a large group, you never feel on top of each other. There's a large dining room with a fabulous library, a lounge area with satellite TV and a conservatory in addition to the outside courtyard and large expanse of grass.
John and Clare are very helpful hosts and we would thoroughly recommend this accommodation.
I booked the stay for 3 people from 23/05 - 26/05/17. I will begin the review with the guesthouse which is absolutely superb. It would comfortably have accommodated a further 6 people. From the kitchen to the bedrooms to the bathrooms everything is of the highest standard possible. The hosts are lovely people who have a keen interest in the area. John is extremely knowledgeable about the area. Guillemont being the site of a major battle during the Somme campaign of 1916.
A plus point of booking this accommodation is the chance to have your evening meals cooked for you and brought to the house at a time to suit. We had ours for 7:30 pm to allow us to make the most of the day and then enjoy our evening meal without the need for going back out. The food was beautiful and plentiful. Cooked to perfection, hearty and very satisfying.
Another point that sets it apart for WW1 enthusiasts is the hidden bunker that John has literally unearthed. A site to behold.
I honestly could not recommend this any higher. It is a gem and John and Claire deserve every success.
Book it, you will not be disappointed.
