I spent a wonderful time at Marta's holiday home. It is located in a tiny sleepy hamlet with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The rooms are clean and comfortable, oozing with character and full of quirky details. Marta cooked an amazing meal with foraged local plants. Pasta with juniper shoots, cream cheese with aromatic herbs, elderflower cordial, omelette with wild chicory, homemade bread and many other delights. We enjoyed it on a lovely patio listening to birds and watching cats lazying in the sun. A perfect place for a relaxing getaway! Not to be missed!
I was first attracted to Abruzzo because it is so wild that bears and lynx still live in the mountains. You rarely see such animals, of course but a short stroll through woodlands and meadows with Marte brought the phrase " unspoilt countryside" much closer to home. During a pleasant wander around the surrounding countryside she must have identified 20 - 30 edible plants simply growing wild in the hedgerows. I was amazed at the variety of textures and flavours so easily available in a small area untainted by chemicals and pollution. At the end of our walk we returned to the House where Marte produced an excellent lunch mainly using the ingredients we had just picked. This turned into a typical Italian lunch sitting on the terrace in bright sunshine overlooking a wonderful view of the mountains. It was made even more authentic by a priest who wandered by and performed a blessing on us and our food.
As is usual with lunches that last several hours I can't remember all we ate but I clearly remember how much I enjoyed the flavours and the beauty of the presentation. The course that stick in my mind were the grilled pear salad which looked ( almost ) too good to eat, the almond humous with wild asparagus ( I was amazed how different wild asparagus tastes compared with the force vegetable you buy in shops), nettle frittata, tagliattelle with wild mushrooms and juniper shoots, witches' broom, the apple and sloe jam which was delicious with pecorino cheese, and finally strawberry and melon fruit salad with homemade ice cream, with a side dish of pickled cherries. Needless to say all washed down with as much local wine as you could cope with and homemade degestivi.
I didn't stay the night so I can't comment on the accommodation but the house looked nice, the whole family were friendly and welcoming, the location beautiful and the food fantastic.
I really enjoyed the whole day, but I don't think it will change my eating habits. I am unlikely to go rooting around in hedgerows in the near future but I remain impressed by what a creative chef with an understanding of local botany can achieve
We had a wonderful stay at II Monte holiday.
The house was very clean and fully equipped.
View from the terrace is breath taking. Just few minutes drive from Bomba lake and old villages.
Marta and Rafal are very helpful and took a very good care of us.
They served fantastic meals. I fully recommend this place!

If you love walking there is many places to go but if you prefer to spend lazy time. hire the car and you can enjoy lovely beaches not too far away or beautiful little towns all around.
We spent wonderful two weeks with my family in Marta's and Rafal's place.
I can highly recommend their house!
