“Great choice at Litchfield NP”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2011

We were very happy at the Latitude 1308. The tents were very comfortable and clean, food was great at the cafe and served by very friendly people. It was easy to get to the attractions nearby and was a perfect weekend getaway. I was in Darwin working from Melbourne and stayed for the weekend.

It's a tented camp, the rooms are basic, (this is not African Safari camping), the beds are comfortable, rooms are clean and we slept well. The charm and rating are in the rest of the offering. The location, perfectly situated to make the most of a full day out in beautiful beautiful Litchfield. The peace and quiet, beautiful gardens surrounded by greenery, birds, wallabies and other assorted Australian wildlife. The owner, Julian, and his family, great conversationalists, excellent cooks (see above for mango cheesecake) and all round great hosts. They could charge double and I would still give it this rating and not be disappointed

We stayed here because we were looking for an affordable place right in Litchfield Park, not Batchelor (it took us about 30 min to drive there from Batchelor). I did not know what to expect, as I had no idea what Safari style accommodation was (it's basically permanent tents on stilts). Overall, it was a really nice place for what it is (we stayed in a similar type of place in Costa Rica and this was way nicer) and the location was perfect. It really made you feel like you are in the bush, but still provided the comforts of home. And for a great price!

The good: The tents were nice, celan and relatively bug-proof. The beds were comfortable. There was a little fan in the tent, which helped keep it cool at night.
The proprietor was super-nice and friendly and made us feel very welcome.
The restaurant was nice (there was not much else around) and we had a really tasty meal of barramundi there one night. The rest of the time we ate noodle soups and snacks (since we were on a budget...) and the proprietor was nice enough to give us hot water for our soups.
The wildlife around the camp was amazing! It was nice to wake up to the sound of birds every morning and see numerous wallabies come almost right up to our tent in the evenings. We saw lots of diffent frogs, including the green tree frog.

The not-so-good: At first I was a little taken aback by the number of spiders in the toilets and showers, and many cane toads around the restaurant area, but I quickly got used to it.

Litchfield was one of the highlights of our trip and we would definitely go back to Latitude 1308 if we are ever in the area again!

What a great way to see Litchfield! A host who knows the area really well and is happy to sit and have a beer with you, and so close to beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes. We absolutely loved it. The food was excellent too.

Latitude 1308 was one of those destinations that we arrived at due to some bad planning on my part - I was supposed to book somewhere else. When I did book I booked the right date in the wrong month. Considering that we spent the following night in the Arafura Suite at the Crown Plaza in Darwin, it could have been considered a bit of a cock up. Fortunately, it wasn’t.

The owner, Julian Sharples, did everything he could to make us welcome. The tents and the facilities were basic but adequate (if you are there in winter ask for a doona - it does get very cold). Meals were included in the package and his daughter's cooking was excellent. The actual meal was early, just on dusk, and there were a couple of others, like us, sitting in their own group. By the end of the evening Julian, his daughter and a couple of their friends/staff, another couple and ourselves had melded it into one of those great conversational evenings that occur so rarely elsewhere, but are none the less highly enjoyable. No doubt this was a result of the welcoming nature of our host.

After the highly enjoyable meal, the walk across the car park to our tent introduced us to the wonders of the night sky. With no moon, and no other lights to interfere for miles, the night sky was absolute magic. Litchfield had given us the magic of its sky where Kakadu and Uluru could not compete.

If you don't mind the most basic of accommodation, excellent food, great accommodating people, and a brilliant night sky, this is where you should stay when you get to Litchfield.

PS: The room rating is meaningless here. These were good tents but tents never-the-less. They aren't the deluxe tents of Africa nor the pitched tents of boy scouts. They are permanent tents , with floors, two single beds, a light and a fan. Indeed they are solid enough that should one the large Kangaroo's bounding past at 2am run into the tent it wouldn't collapse.
