We were there for our honeymoon from the 4th to 9th February, 2016 on a half board basis (breakfast and dinner included).

First the good things -
Superb location - We had a beach view room which had an amazing view of the sea right at our doorstep...it was almost as if the sea was an extension of the room !
The restaurant with a sea deck is also amazing...it was a great experience enjoying food sitting right above the waves splashing.

Facility of bicycles - The facility to take a bicycle by just signing your room number any time of the day was amazing. The quality of the bicycles was also good. We used these to buy beer, water, snacks etc from the supermarket nearby

Pool - The swimming pool along with the unique cafe in the center of the pool was great

Now, things that need major improvements -

De-humidifier in Rooms - Although the room had excellent facilities, being this close to the sea, there was a constant peculiar 'sea-odour' 24x7 in the room..plus the humidity made it worse...a simple de-humidifier in the room would make it much more comfortable

Service - Room service was extremely slow...lethargic at times...we had to call up the reception three-four times for a simple thing such as an extra bowl, which we were finally told that we will need to collect it ourselves from the restaurant. Even the restaurant staff was hesitant to hand us an empty bowl as if it was silver/gold plated! Its just an empty bowl !!!!!

Staff - This is not generalized for all the staff, but there were a few staff members at the restaurant who were on the borderline of being labelled rude. Very slow in service...almost uninterested in their service...My wife is a Vegetarian and had very few options for eating and instead of helping us out, the staff members were almost conveying annoyance at this issue!

Food - At the prices they charge, the food needs major major improvement. Nothing in the menu or in the buffet was exciting on any of the days while our stay. The breakfast was the same every single day....they could have easily changed just 1-2 dishes everyday which would give some variety atleast....eating the exact same breakfast on a holiday for 5 consecutive days was really disappointing..

Prices - The charges at La Reserve for everything..the rooms, the food, the drinks..everything is really expensive..almost in the premium range and the overall experience you get after staying at the hotel does not match up. The experience is more of a 3-star property rather than a premium resort experience...For example - you need to pay to get drinking water in your rooms on a daily basis (only the day you check-in, you get a 'complimentary' bottle of water)...you only get WiFi near the pool; no signals in the room (how much would it cost to setup another signal router for all the rooms!!!)

Honestly, from the pictures I saw online, I was expecting a much much better experience at the Domaine de La Reserve. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a basic drink and a very cheesy welcome speech. I found the whole concept very tacky and lacking in sophistication.

The hotel room was very dated with outdated cheap looking furniture and cheesy swans made from towels. It looked like a motel room; most certainly not a 4-star hotel room.

While the buffet had a lot of variety, the quality wasn't the best. However, what really turned me off was that we specifically booked this hotel because of photos we'd seen of the incredibly beautiful water and beach. Turns out the beach had TWO huge pipes leading directly onto the sea water! It was a major turn-off and made the prospect of swimming at the beach a real turn off. Indeed, water quality was not good as, when we were having the buffet dinner over the water, I could see foam and grease on the water. I felt so bad for the fish that swam in that filth and, of course, was turned off eating amongst the polluted water.

The one true positive at this hotel are the lovely giant turtles. Very gentle and curious, interactive creatures. I truly felt blessed to spend time with them.

Overall, I would definitely NEVER go back to this hotel; management is looking to make a buck at any cost and you can tell they are fake nice for the money as opposed to wanting to truly offer a quality experience.

Please save your money or book elsewhere on Praslin.

Room Tip: upgrade decor urgent

I had booked this resort after reading all the positive reviews on this site. It was my honeymoon and I had booked a beach front deluxe room. I had requested 'Dorothy' (Reservation Assistant) to reserve the best deluxe room for me. On arrival I was upgraded to a family suite and we were given an awesome welcome. The beach belonging to the resort is one of the best with ample opportunities of snorkeling (loads of fish and even some sting rays) and swimming. I would like to recommend this resort to everyone and would like to thank the management on being a wonderful host and making our stay very memorable. Also a special thank you to Dorothy for entertaining my request.

I did a reservation asking about snorkeling and totally lie to me: it was IMPOSSIBLE to enter the water, not even to have a decent swim. The food is average a part a good piña colada at the pool bar, the room old and very basic, the service doesn't exist and at check out they basically kick us out 2 minutes before check-out time. No, I'm not recommending this hotel to nobody and the cost is ridicules high for what you get. For that price you get better choices.

Third time lucky, or just very blessed!

My husband and I spent 7 blissful days at La Reserve from 10 February. We booked our two week holiday on line with Erna van Aswegen of Barefoot Breaks and congratulate her on preparing a flawless itinerary.

Our first 7 nights were spent in idyllic conditions just 2,2 km round the corner, at our other Praslin favourite, Acajou Beach Resort. This works as a perfect stress free combination for elderly travellers. Because my husband is into his 88th year, we switched our allegiance four years ago from Thailand to Seychelles.Praslin has a similar feel to Phuket, with delightful, honest, friendly people, shimmering turquoise sea with a temp of 27deg, powdery white beaches and lush tropical vegetation.

Mahe is a manageable 5 hour flight from Johannesburg on Air Seychelles which we have found an excellent airline. Then it's a mere 20 minute hop across to Praslin in a small de Haviland plane.

On arrival in Seychelles we have always been warmly greeted by Creole or Masons Travel. What a joy to have your passport and luggage handled for you and to be transported effortlessly to your hotel without having to dig for rupees, hunt for a porter or find a call box to hire a taxi.

As South Africans we love the safe feel of the islands, where you still see ladies walking home on their own at night. Seychelles is the perfect holiday escape for single folk or widows who want to relax in a crime- free holiday haven. After an efficient hotel check in process, you can be lulled to sleep by the waves before 11pm on the same day, when it's still only 9pm back in South Africa!

It was a real Home from Home experience to be welcomed back to La Reserve for our third successive visit. What a joy to find the charming and serene Lorna Awale still managing the hotel so expertly in the absence of the owner Mr Joe Albert and his partner Sylvie. Beautiful bubbly Chantal is still there too, managing the vital Marketing portfolio. What a joy it was for us to renew friendship with Claudia, a Capetonian and fellow Springbok, now serving in the HR.dept. Highly efficient Helena still heads up the helpful team of young Receptionists for whom nothing seems too much trouble, even when it comes to finding flippers for an 87 year old with odd -sized feet but who comes to La Reserve because of the delightful snorkeling from the private beach. This year the sea was not great for snorkeling and was rather turbulent and milky. We saw the best fish from our breakfast and dinner table!

The jetty restaurant is one of the best features of the hotel. It was a joy to return and still find stalwarts like Madelaine, Julina, Petula, Fransesca and Marina waiting on guests so willingly and always with happy smiles. Thank you to the hard working new recruits like Janet, Kristina, Christopher and other waitrons who served us with enthusiasm too. Jack, the charming Sri Lankan Barman, is an excellent asset to La Reserve too.

The jetty restaurant looked extra special on Valentine's Day when the staff worked so hard to make it a night to remember. The jovial Mauritian chef and his skilled kitchen team produced tasty culinary delights and mouth watering desserts with variety and creative flair. A special treat for us was the delicious grilled Job fish and Red Snapper.

The breakfast buffets at La Reserve provide ample choice of fresh fruit, cereals, dried fruit, pancakes, toast, croissants, cheese, jams and preserves, your style of eggs to order, ham, bacon and thick creamy homemade yoghurt. Those on a Banting diet would have no problem finding good sources of protein, if you are strong -willed enough to turn your back on the decadent carbs!

Congratulations to Abdul, Lena and the Housekeeping Team for keeping our room in a pristine condition. Nedgie was our special chamber maid and decorated our kingsize bed so beautifully to welcome us back to the same room. The rooms are spacious and airy with plenty of cupboards and drawers. The bathrooms with twin basins are a delight and we found the shower was most efficient. There is a beautiful sunken bath too, if you enjoy a lingering soak in bubbles.

A lovely little mid afternoon perk is the free tea, coffee, home made cake and biscuits served at the swimming pool bar every day at 4pm.The pool itself must rank as one of the most stunning pools you will ever find at any holiday destination. It has an area for serious swimmers and ample space for those who just want to wallow or bob and shallow parts for non swimmers and tiny tots. The underwater bar stools are perfect for those who prefer to sip while staying in their swimsuits. There is ample shade under umbrellas or in the pool bar. The pool loungers were clean and comfortable and perfect for relaxing with a good book. There is free wifi beside the pool and in all the public areas, but as yet not in the bedrooms .

You will think you have arrived in Paradise while sipping your favourite drink on your balcony at sunset and watching the crimson tipped waves lap gently below.Thank you La Reserve for another wonderful week.We can't wait to return!
