We were doing a classic car tour of Spain and Portugal and arrived at the Douro Scala for a two night stay. I would like to say this hotel was great because it had some very nice aspects. However, the ultra modern design of the new part of the hotel put form over function. The bath and shower were in the room, there was a severe lack of storage space, no bedside tables and no drawers for clothes, which made it totally impractical as a living space. Clearly the designers had never had to use the room. On the positive side, we had an outdoor space, fantastic views and an excellent outdoor swimming pool. Service was good and we were given a glass of port on arrival and with our dinner on the first night. The dinner was good with wine included. We chose to eat in hotel on the second night and the food was very average as was the wine we were served with. Also, getting a drink before dinner was a challenge as there was no bar and the waiter had to disappear for 15 minutes to fetch us our drinks from some remote location. Breakfast was buffet with a good selection but the hot food options were inedible. So overall some very good points but spoilt by lots of negatives.
