My wife and enjoyed very much our stay at Douro Scala. We know pretty well the region since my wife´s family comes from that area. We chose the hotel for the oportunity to relax for one night. The bedroom is big, with good lighting, taking advantage of being inserted in the old manor house from the XVII century. The interior is very comfortable taking you back a few centuries. The spa and swimming pool were interesting, but not impressive. Very interesting to stay, and a lovely region to explore. Despite minor things, a hotel worth a visit.

Room tip: Stay in the renewed manor house.

Ok, it´s not the most luxurious 5 star hotel but for a weekend with friends and family it´s very pleasant. A beautiful property with a breathtaking view over the Douro River, an excelent restaurant and very friendly staff.
I think it is comfortable but with some flaws: poor breakfast for a 5* with average products and variety (like a 3*), the rooms are nice and different with a bathtub over the mountains, but places to put your towel were not there... The windows were dirty and some details tells us that a renovation will be needed soon. But hey: great value for money - hard to find better in the region. A word to the staff: you're great and thanks for your kindness.

Part of a package, to get to our room was a nightmare - 2 lifts and a decent walk. Had to switch rooms as the first one had lights etc which did not work. Next room recently vacated but not cleaned - we waited and after 2 further visits by house keeping took residency. This room was a good size with a good view. The restaurant was pleasant and the food good. You are a captive audience as the hotel is a good way from other eating facilities. Also, take care when driving as the directions and sign posting to the hotel as terrible

Room tip: Ask for easy access rooms with a view and a balcony

Firstly, the location is incredible. An easy 2 hour train ride from Porto will have you in Peso de Ragua, and a 20 minute taxi ride will have you at this amazing property set in the hills with views to die for. The restaurant is perfectly fine. I found the dinner menu a little bit limited and unfortunately the waiters forgot the wine (despite two polite reminders) but the breakfasts were very good.

The rooms were lovely (we were in one of the older rooms in the main building) and while having the shower in the room (no privacy at all) wasn't expected, it didn't cause a problem for a couple on holiday.

The staff were all friendly and helpful to the extend they understood English and my very poor attempts at Portugese!

But, the one thing holding this hotel back in my opinion, in fact the only real negative, was the bed. It wasn't just uncomfortable, it was absolutely awful. The worst bed I've ever slept in. At one point I considered sleeping in the bathtub before resolving to lay all the pillows on the mattress and sleep on that.

I am not a fussy sleeper at all, but I can't properly describe how bad this bed was, except that it hurt to lie on. Maybe this is a feature that has been fixed in the newer rooms (I hope so).

But aside from problems with the bed this is a fantastic hotel and well worth visiting!

Room tip: Let them know if you need a private shower.
