Firstly, the location is incredible. An easy 2 hour train ride from Porto will have you in Peso de Ragua, and a 20 minute taxi ride will have you at this amazing property set in the hills with views to die for. The restaurant is perfectly fine. I found the dinner menu a little bit limited and unfortunately the waiters forgot the wine (despite two polite reminders) but the breakfasts were very good.

The rooms were lovely (we were in one of the older rooms in the main building) and while having the shower in the room (no privacy at all) wasn't expected, it didn't cause a problem for a couple on holiday.

The staff were all friendly and helpful to the extend they understood English and my very poor attempts at Portugese!

But, the one thing holding this hotel back in my opinion, in fact the only real negative, was the bed. It wasn't just uncomfortable, it was absolutely awful. The worst bed I've ever slept in. At one point I considered sleeping in the bathtub before resolving to lay all the pillows on the mattress and sleep on that.

I am not a fussy sleeper at all, but I can't properly describe how bad this bed was, except that it hurt to lie on. Maybe this is a feature that has been fixed in the newer rooms (I hope so).

But aside from problems with the bed this is a fantastic hotel and well worth visiting!

Room tip: Let them know if you need a private shower.

Location is great with wonderful views, however that's about all it has going for it. Our room was okay again with great views but the overall feel of the place is just wrong. The service was terrible - the attitude of the staff completely indifferent. We travelled with another couple and when we arrived only one room was ready - when they finally got their room it was a completely different standard to ours even though we had booked they same type of room. On complaining we were told they were of the same standard. Not enough pool loungers, breakfast was a bun fight.

Stayed both in 2015 and 2016 - the views are absolutely stunning but that's not enough for an hotel to be 5 stars hotel.
In 2015 we noticed humidity problems in our bedroom, the sauna and steam room were not taken care of.
The Food was really good as well as the staff at the restaurant.

Regarding my 2016 stay I was shocked with the service: tried to call several times to book a room, never end up being able to, ordered a main dish with Turnip greens and it came without them, the breakfast buffet tables had bees on top of food (for example on top of cold meats) and for lunch ordered a Cesar Salad that came with a dead fly on the lettuce leaves.

I’m an event agent reason why I got in touch with the Hotel to try and give my feedback.
Got an arrogant answer back trying to diminish the importance of all my comments.

Room tip: ask for a room that overlooking the vineyard

The hotel is beautiful, with great views, offers nice breakfast with good variety, but the restaurant experience wasn't a nice one despite the very friendly staff; in fact the staff was particularly amateurish.
The outdoor swimming pool is quite small and not what was suppose to be in a so-called 5 stars hotel.
An experience to not repeat, unless the hotel is demoted to 3/4 stars.

In Fact breathtaking of the Douro Valley , location incredible , rooms very modern, lie in bed and just look at the vista !!Lovely building , however not enough umbrellas ( shade) to sit under as very hot . Swimming pool small but a necessity to cool off . Dinner expensive and chefs recommendations best value for money . Breakfast superb . Worth a visit simply stunning !!
