We spent a week at Kapsaliana. The staff was polite, helpful and attentive. The food was so good that we never had dinner anywhere else. Our room (Aquarius suite) was extremely comfortable and this was the only good hotel I could find in Crete with a fireplace inside the room. It was necessary since we stayed during the month of January when it gets cold at night. The heating also works very well.
The hamlet has been restored over 40 years with care and great attention to details, we can only reccommend Kapsaliana and hope to be back soon.

Room Tip: tell Brigitte (the manager) what you are looking for. she will help you make the best choice.

We have now been 7 times to this hotel, always in spring and autumn.
It is the most wonderful place to recuperate from a busy life.
The owner restored the cottages and he is an architect who studied and worked in France, speaks fluent french.
The lady who runs the hotel is Belgian, a pearl and speaks 5 languages.
She can help you in all aspects and you can trust her completely.
Her husband is a very good guide and well read.
All the meals are good and the staff exceptionally kind.
Most of them have been there for many years which proves the atmosphere in the hotel.
It lies up on the hill with a beautiful view on rethymnon and has a good pool.
I would not recommend this hotel for very small children as it is a 30 minute drive to the beach.
it is ideal for walking and making trips into the hinterland by car.Anyhow a car is a must!
It is a bit expensive now, but as the hotel is so special they can keep on affording to ask high prices for the rooms.
If we can still afford we shall return!

Room Tip: best on the top floor

We were a group of 5 adults staying for two nights. Kapsaliana is an abandoned town now turned into around 15 high end rooms and suites. Each room is unique - one of ours had a little garden, another a small terrace. It is definitely worth checking exactly which room you are getting as some looked much nicer than others - several had private terraces on the first floor, although I guess you have to pay more for these!

The setting is stunning, on a hillside overlooking olive groves, mountains in one direction and the sea in the other.

The breakfast was really first rate - lots of local produce, bread, eggs, meat, yogurt, fruit, bread. As we were leaving early on the day of departure they prepared a breakfast pack for us to take away. Dinner was good but perhaps a little overpriced. If you are staying for a few days then I would recommend cheap and cheerful Taverna Faraggi which is about 5mins drive away.

My only minor reservation was that the whole thing comes across as quite slick, and perhaps slightly commercialised/impersonal as a result.

We had booked our stay at the Kapsaliana in the new year and we could not have been more pleased with our choice. It is situated in the quiet Cretan hills and a car is needed to get around. It is the perfect sanctuary for peace and relaxation and the restoration of this ancient village is spectacular. Our room was beyond our expectations and the terrace was the ideal place for us to enjoy the good weather and the quiet evenings. We ate at the restaurant twice and food is superbly presented, fresh and delicious. Breakfast selection was fantastic. Thank you to all the staff at the Kapsaliana who made our stay so memorable with their great service and friendly smiles. Can't wait to return.

The hotel restaurant was a fine dinning experience. The food was excellent quality and the service very agréable! This is exactly what we should call "new greek cuisine"! Bravo.
I strongly recommend it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, Kapsaliana Village Hotel in Crete offers accommodation profoundly different from any other in the Mediterranean. A holiday experience in a village which has been fully restored with high respect to the history and architecture of this land. Kapsaliana was part of the Arkadi Monastery. The story of the settlement starts in 1600 with the construction of the church, and continues with the creation of the olive oil mill in 1763. More people then came to the area to work on the olive trees and land, and built houses around the olive oil mill which, during the peak era, accommodated 13 families and 50 people. Nowadays, the settlement of Kapsaliana has been converted with love and artistry into a unique hotel. With particular care and diligent work the olive oil mill, the church and the utility rooms were gradually transformed into rooms and suites, restaurant, swimming pool and lounge. ... more   less
