“Great spot on a sunny day”
Review of Praia Formosa

Lots of room for many people. Sand is nice with characteristic black streaks through it.
Lots of parking and few eating spots in the area.

Not far from Vila do Porto and easy to reach as is still on the less mountainous side of the Island. Nice beach with Lifeguard and good for Sun bath, swimm and beach sports, also great that is not so crowded. Toillets and showers also available as well as a cafeteria.

After a day around the island meeting other amazing places we stopped here to relax an enjoy the beach. We were surprised with the warm water. There where few people so we could be very comfortable. Totally recommended.

Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, sunbathing on the beach and tidal pools. Dressing facilities and a snack bar too. Great place to take the kids, just beware the jellyfish!

Started off here on a 7k walk to Porto. The oath is quite tricky at first and should only be attempted in wet weather if you are experienced walkers, fit and with full kit. At first there is quite a lot of scrambling over old lava fields, very close to the sea and on very narrow cliff paths. Many of the uphills (and there are a lot as you are climbing from sea level to about 300m) are old stream beds. Thankfully they were pretty dry but wouldn't take much to be quite tricky.

It was a great walk though, we ambled slowly and it took us 3hrs. Interesting that my GPS thought it was more like 12k! Beautiful scenery, very wild and lots to look at. Highly recommended and now I'm tempted to do GR1, the whole circuit round Sta. Maria.
