Stayed at this hotel for a week in order to do some walking in the Sierra D'Espuna. We chose this hotel on good reports found on this site and it lived up to our expectations. The room was spacious and clean, the meals, though simple, were good and excellent value. The whole family gave a very friendly service and helped us with walking routes, having a series of guides and maps available. Tourism has not taken over the area yet so it is still very quiet and very Spanish but we found that walking trails were very clearly marked and well maintained. Due to the late spring the area was very beautiful with many wild flowers in abundance. A car is essential to reach the hotel and for exploring the nature reserve.

We had a truly disappointing stay here. It went wrong from the minute we arrived and what we hoped would be a relaxing four night stay turned into an unpleasant one night stop-off - and an expensive one.
Our suggestions to the owners are:
1 - Start by giving your guests a warm, friendly welcome. If you must ask them to pay on arrival, greet them, show them to their room, maybe offer a drink and then ask for the credit card. Explain the reasons rather than simply saying it’s ‘hotel policy’. However, the policy is totally out of keeping with Alastair Sawday principles –it’s the first time in 24 stays at his places I have encountered this. Asking guests to pay up front gives the message that you not trust them – not a great start. Giving no refund if guests leave early (even if you do waive the cost of dinner) simply means they go away and tell their friends what a dreadful place they’ve been to.
2 - Give rooms a good airing and warm them up before guests arrive. No one enjoys being shown a room which is cold and smells of damp and sewers.
3 - Serve free tap water. Saying that you ‘don’t have a licence’ is simply laughable. Water is fundamental to basic hospitality.
4 - Don’t make a big thing about serving fresh food if you can’t. We know it’s difficult if your cover numbers are unpredictable, but at least be honest if it’s a problem and you are going to have to use frozen produce and reheat vegetables. They were nasty.
5 – Offer a choice of breakfast. Tea is better served hot, jam nicer if not wrapped in plastic and cheese more attractive if removed from cling film before serving.
5 -Do continue to offer outdoor activities for guests -this would have been great had we stayed longer.
6 - Sort out the above problems and please leave package tour mentality with the high rise monstrosities on the coast– the Mariposa is a lovely building in a beautiful setting. If you are going to feature in such a well respected guidebook, PLEASE meet our expectations!

We were a party of 3 adults and 3 teenagers,Grandparents,Mum,2 Grandsons and 1 friend. We had booked a quad-bike experience for our Grandson´s 18th Birthday present and he could take a friend, his brother when he heard about it wanted to go as well,so we booked him and his mum on another bike.
We arrived at the Hotel around 10am,the wearther was sunny and warm,we all had coffee before Mark took the gang to their bikes and gave them a safety chat on the "do´s and don´ts" of quad-biking and off the went.
We decided to have a walk just following a small road on the top of the mountains, the scenery is wonderful, goats on the mountain-side, and we stumbled on another restaurant where we had a welcome coffee sitting on the patio just soaking up the views and tranquility of our surroundings.
We strolled back to the Hotel and had just settled by the pool with a drink when the gang arrived back full of their biking experience, our Grandson thought it was the "best present ever!!!" Having relaxed at the pool for a bit we were then called in for our lunch which was beautifully presented and enjoyed by all.Wonderful Day!!!!
Our thanks to Mark and Tom,also good directions to find the Mariposa will definately be having a retun visit.

Mark and his family were great. This was our first trip to Europe and they helped us from the start. The room was great, and the food was amazing. The hotel is a lovely place in a beautiful setting. We really felt like we were on vacation.
