“a heaven within a heaven”
Reviewed 8 August 2016 for a stay in July 2015

Palazzo Notar Nicchi is a heavenly guesthouse ensconced within an equally heavenly village with a rich and unusually sophisticated and ancient history. It is an exquisitely renovated centuries-old palazzo in the center of Polizzi Generosa, which is tucked up against the beautiful Madonie Mountains and juts out like the stern of a ship on the edge of a cliff. Upon entering this inn you will blink your eyes and wonder if you might be dreaming. What is a place like this doing in a tiny unknown mountain town in the middle of Sicily? All I can say is don’t tell too many friends; it is perfect just the way it is. The very clean, spacious, and beautifully-appointed apartments (all part of the same palazzo, which you can use together for a large group) offer an unforgettablel place to lay your head after getting happily lost in this rarified medieval village of steep and winding stone streets. Due to its high mountain perch, puffy clouds customarily waft in from the sea by mid morning, sometimes lingering long enough to make you think that maybe you actually are in heaven while you wander the streets or hike in the Madonie. It’s a hard choice in the evenings between wanting to linger on the large terrace as the sun sets pretending to be a baroness while gazing out over the patchwork of agricultural splendor, and actually taking part in the evening passeggiata ritual that is so robust and integral to the soul of Polizzi.

You will also find yourself making excuses to ring up the palazzo’s knowledgeable and helpful caretakers, Maria and Giuseppe, because they are in fact that delightful, kind and genuine. Maria is well-versed in the history of the many churches, treasures and antiquities of Polizzi, and Giuseppe will not miss a detail in helping you organize your time and activities. You will be able to fully exhale with their thoughtful guidance. Suzanne, the palazzo’s owner, does not take her responsibility lightly; she is a consummate professional and the engine to this train that makes this inn so extraordinary and unique.

Polizzi Generosa, thankfully so, has no signs of tourism; just the customary activities of every day life. From morning bakery visits and the hanging of fresh wash on the ubiquitous clotheslines, to shopping on Wednesday’s market day for a huge variety of fresh Sicilian produce, cheese, olives, or the famous “bada bean” grown only locally in the Madonie region, Polizzi is an untarnished gem of justifiably proud people. Truly, the combination of Palazzo Notar Nicchi and the village itself make for a memorable side trip to paradise.

“Fantastic stay in every way!”
Reviewed 5 August 2016 for a stay in March 2015

Polizzi Generosa is not on all visitors travel path in Sicily, but a visit to this unique ancient hilltown will not disappoint. The village is rich in art and culture in a most authentic way, with plentiful churches that display it's fine artifacts from times past. To make a stay there quite special, Palazzo Notar Nicchi is a stunning find for an accommodation right in the center of it all. This ancient palace has been skillfully restored with contemporary updates and beautiful furnishings, including quaint balconies that overlook the beautiful rooftops of this magical place. The interiors exhibit quite a bit of beautiful art from the surrounding region and are very comfortable - including towels, linens, bedding, and a fully furnished and elegant kitchen. It deserves a five star rating and was one of our favorite accommodations in our month long tour of Sicily.
