“Wonderful - Will Be Back!”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

I've never written a review before, but want to for Mantra. It is truly a wonderful hotel. Not only that, I stayed, then went to Koh Tao for a few days and was concerned the second stay when I returned wouldn't live up to the first experience but it completely did!

It is not by the beach (though their shuttle bus will take you there several times each day), but if like me you are more of a pool person and enjoy swimming in an infinity pool with wonderful views of the ocean then you can't beat this place! The only point to make is that when the hotel is busy you will need to get up early to get a sun bed by the pool (I understand they have introduced an additional sun deck a bit further away from the pool), and the sun beds are quite close together to get in as many as possible. But that didn't really bother me - they are very comfortable and well, the views!!

The rooms are great - I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a LOVE room, which was very spacious and incredibly comfortable. I didn't watch any movies, but there seemed to be a good selection, and I did take advantage of the music library available on the in-room computer. I had to do some work on my laptop, and the wi-fi was excellent too.

Other things worth a mention are fantastic pornstar martinis at the swim up bar, a seriously good gym (again with views to die for), the excellent breakfast and last but by no means least the staff. They are friendly and really cannot do more to help and make your stay as magical as possible. In fact they actively seek constructive feedback to keep enhancing what is already a really wonderful hotel. I'm looking forward to going back there already!

My husband, my 1-year son old and I have just returned from a 10-day stay at Mantra Samui.

It was my first time in Thailand and after having searched extensively on the web, I decided to go by the positive reviews here on Tripadvisor.

The pick up from the airport when smooth (apart from my son throwing up but the Mantra driver was so sweet and understanding about it. Such are the joys of parenthood). Check-in was quick and efficient. Our room (Cozy) was according to our expectations.

What made our stay amazing:
The staff is nothing but fantastic. They are not just smiling (as I experienced with the Thai people in general) but they are really cheeky with Love (a Mantra Samui expression). They have humor, they are service-minded as well as warm-hearted. My son adored them all and was really spoiled by each and everyone of them.

I had 4 complimentary yoga classes during my stay. Mantra Samui has 3 yoga teachers and I found them all to be very skilled yoga instructors. They are the real deal. Beginners as well as experienced persons can benefit from these classes.

The view from almost anywhere at the hotel is breath-taking. Our Cozy room had a long balcony and it was very relaxing to enjoy the mellow mood of the pool area and the restaurant from our balcony (our room was number 231, which is close the the restaurant - practical if you travel with children and it still has a great view).

We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast each morning. They had everything I could think of: Eggs practically anyway you wanted them, bacon, sausages, plenty of fruit, salads, bread and pastries. It was my impression that all hotel guests loved the breakfast because the place was packed every morning. But everything runs smoothly because of the staff.

Other positive experiences: efficient laundry, perfect housekeeping, plenty of movies on demand, free wifi, Mini mini club for our son, stroller you could borrow, shuttle service

Areas where I could see some improvement:
The portions in the restaurant at lunch and dinner are on the (very) small side. Perhaps Mantra Samui could give customers the option to choose from a small or large portion? We would have paid more for a larger portion. However, some dishes were adequate, like the pasta with salmon and vodka (yum). The steak is really good, and so is the fruit salad with syrup vinaigrette. The prices could perhaps seem high if compared with a local thai restaurant but at a 5 star hotel and what prices are like in Europe, I don't really think the price level is an issue.

The lunch menu is too scarce if you stay there for more than 2-3 nights. More thai dishes would be great.

Pool and daybed situation: The pool is perhaps on the small side if the hotel is fully booked. When we arrived all daybeds were reserved from the break of dawn because of the limited number of daybeds. We spoke to Robert about this and he explained that they were waiting for daybeds but there had been a delay due to the flooding. Within a couple of days the daybeds came. They were now all by the pool area, which means that you are lying very close to your neighbors. Robert spoke about making another daybed area, which I think is a good idea.

Some evenings in the restaurant were very quiet. We think most people when to Fisherman's Village or Chaweng beach in the evening. We were there during Valentine's and maybe the hotel could do a special menu on such evenings, with entrée, main and dessert for a fixed price?

I rate this hotel a 4.5 going on 5. Despite the small issues I found the pros outweighed the cons by far. Keep in mind that this hotel opened in November - still each and every employee was embodying the Mantra spirit. If you want a place with personality Mantra is the place. When we were leaving (in a rush) my husband said "I feel bad that we didn't have time to say good by the staff in the restaurant". This is how you feel after a memorable stay at Mantra!

Dear Theomin,

Our day have just started here and I am already extremely happy!
It is great to read that you have enjoyed our Yoga classes and that you could experience the different styles of Shaun, Mike and Craig!
Similarly nice to know that you have enjoyed, the Breafkast, Your room, the MiniMini club and the many facilities that our hotel has to offer. Perhaps next time you should also try our Squash courts:)

Your comments about our lunch are very very valuable to me and I have already discussed in our morning meeting to move the launch of our new menu forward. We have planned to start our extended menu in April (to give time to our very young hotel to get fully up to speed with the high qulity menu we offer) but we I will personally make sure that we start to offer a larger variety sooner!

The lack of special menu on Valentine's day is a mistake that I take full responsibility for. I am sorry that we did not deliver our usual cheeky- ness on that occasion.

The second sun deck on top of our squash courts is almost fully complete - the only thing missing is our shower stand which should arrive in a matter of days.

I would like to thank you for taking the time and writing a detailed review about Mantra. Your feedback on how we can make Mantra even better is extremely valuable to me!

I really enjoyed reading that you like our facilites and the view.
What I am most proud of is that you have called my colleagues "fantastic" and that you have noticed their friendly cheeky -ness and their warm and loving care. This is what Mantra is all about and I truly belive that they are the reason that Mantra is special.
I hope that I can see the three of you back in Mantra perhaps on Valentine's day in 2013. Robert

Hi! We stayed here with my family one week from Europe. The rooms were totally new and well fashionable designed. You can see a fantastic panorama from all rooms which is good because we did not have to pay extra money for that. I like hotels which are calm, in the nature, and full comfort, they perfectly implemented it. We made trip in the forest and it is easily from here. We saw colorful butterfly which was as big as my head. The staff is biggest advantage of this hotel, mixed Thai and European member. They are honestly kind, friendly and precise. Before I choose this hotel thinking on what is important to me. Close beach or anti-tsunami location with cooler weather and beautiful view. I think we choose perfect! :-)

Stayed for one week in the love room, top floor and away enough from the pool to have privacy, great views, rooms have on demand movies and music with heaps of variety. Super comfy pillows. The staff are amazing and will bend over backwards. The owner walks around at breakfast occasionally and says hello which is a nice touch. We made good use of the shuttle service and ended up hiring a jeep for two days at the bottom of the hill, as taxis will not drive up the hill for less than 300 baht. For those that think how big could this hill be, I can guarantee that you will never attempt it, plus it's not lit at night. The exclusivity of the location is well worth being away from it all. Make sure you try the pancakes!!! We are sad to leave today.

I read the review of this resort on TripAdvisor and my expectations were high. I had two weeks on my hand in Thailand, and some of these days were spent at the Mantra Samui. I knew everything(I Thought) before I came to the resort so- I did not mind that the place was far away from the beach or that the resort was placed in an uphill area. What I minded was this: The hotel brags about a BIG pool. This is NOT the case. It is an ordinary sized pool. The resort has something between 15-20 sunbeds, these are placed with 5-10 cm next to each other so theres is NO way you will have any privacy. I overheard a ton of conversations that I didnt want to be a part of, but I had no choice being almost on the top of the neighbour. I travelled without kids but I must say I felt sorry for the couples who did. There is a tiny kids pool there, and although the kids and parents that were in the pool, were well-behaved, there is NO way you can escape kids or families if you want to.FOOD: tasty but EXPENSIVE. I had just stayed at a detox hotel before I came to mantra so I didnt have the urge to eat so much, if it wasnt for this I would have starved to death. two shrimps and two small bits of shellfish was one of the dishes on the menu-220 baht.. Also was charged 300 baht for a glass of wine which i fine stiff- have in mind that this is NOT a 5 star although they say so themselves.ROOMS: looks and feels good, but does it help when I through the wall hear my neighbour speaking, snoring and chatting? Although the hotel has shuttles to Chaweng and Fishermans Village this doesnt help out the feeling of total isolation. You can sit in the restaurant/bar but that is attached to the swimming pool where everyone is so.. Nice gym which I used every day, but i doesnt compensate. I thought in the beginning I was ungreatful, but after I overheard a converstaion betwwen two of the guests by the pool, I understand that the dissatisfaction wasnt only mine. I feel this place is NO where near a five star property. A real 5 star resort is a place that you dont want to leave. Here is all you want to do is to leave. I also was charged for a pickup from my other hotel, this pickup showed up 1 hour to late, and this happened only after I had called them and asked where they were. Want to mention staff though, as they were super-sweet.Next time I will go for a real 5 star at Zazen or Sala.Mantra Samui need to change their Mantra.

Dear MoccaMocca,

We at Mantra love hospitality and put our heart and soul into providing amazing experiences.

I was happy to read that you find our meals tasty and that you liked the design of our rooms and you also took advantage of our amazingly equipped gym.

At the same time I was shocked to read about your stay in Mantra.

I was shocked for the following reason:

You have never once asked to change rooms – a request we would have happily granted to make sure you are happy.

You never mentioned that you are not fully satisfied. If you would have, we would certainly have found a solution to your problems.

I was also shocked how different experience you had in Mantra compared to the 72 (out of 79 at the time of the review) Reviewers who gladly titled their reviews: “Fantastic Mantra” “Amazing Mantra” Fell in Love with Mantra Samui” “Thank You Mantra For Being Great”. 63 Reviewers out of the 72 gave (a very significant majority ) Mantra 5/5 stars.

Regarding food prices in Mantra:
This issue I take very seriously because regardless of financial loss to Mantra I consciously make sure that our prices are at least 30% cheaper than in other five star resort on the island.

I do this because as a guest I hate when hotels overcharge and as a manager I am proud to break with the tradition of 5 star overcharges:
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: We do not charge for Wifi
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: We provide complimentary airport transfer
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: We provide in room movies free of charge (more than 2000)
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: We provide complimentary yoga classes so people can try it
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: Our Guests can use squash courses free of charge
Unlike other five star hotels in Thailand: we provide dinner options (Main Course) from 5,5 Euros

All our restaurant prices are below other five star prices while all our meals are truly home-made: We grow the majority of our spices in our gardens, we bake our breads and other patisserie products fresh every day, we prepare our own pasta, our own jams, we home-cure our salmon for breakfast and the list could go own.

The reason I reply to all tripadvisor reviews personally is that I find tripadvisor to be an excellent way to receive constructive feedback. Due to constructive feedback from other Guests we have instituted many changes that greatly enhance the experience in Mantra:
Guests have contributed to our betterment by for example suggesting to:

Provide more shuttles (we have increased our shuttles from 6 a day to 15 a day because of this)
Provide more sun beds (we have more than doubled the available sun beds)
Provide Asian meals during our already great breakfast (we will start that in 7 days)
I sincerely would have loved it to have received constructive criticism from you, because my only job is to listen to our Guests and fulfill their wishes.

Sadly your review did not contain any points of constructive criticism.

Dear MoccaMocca, after I read your review I felt very sorry and became very sad.
I am sorry, because unlike the great majority of our Guests, you did not have a great time!
I am sad because if you would have talked to me I would have happily given you a different room or do anything in my power to make your stay amazing! Robert
