“Peaceful”

Beautiful cottage on Crabtree River. We thought the accommodation was great, with good breakfast provisions. Close to Huon Valley for restaurants - had dinner in Franklin. Loved the peaceful location, and privacy.

We stayed only one night at the Crabtree River Cottages but we'll definitely stay there again. Beautiful and tastefully decorated, set on a peaceful riverbank, the well-appointed cottage offered charming and very clean accommodation, a comfy bed and a delicious breakfast, along with a well-maintained garden! A relaxing Spa to enjoy, we highly recommend for couples looking for an enjoyable time away. Good value!

The cottages are in a beautiful location and on first sight we just loved it, however it didn't take long for the negatives to detract from our initial impressions.

Firstly, we stayed in Emily and the afternoons and early evening were so uncomfortably hot it was almost unbearable. There had been a token sun mesh type blind installed on one kitchen window (and one longe window) but it didn't suffice and something with much more block-out is urgently needed. The penetrating light and heat filtered through to the lounge room which consequently was like an oven. Because of the direct line of sunshine, there was no escape on the balcony either, as it was in full sun with no awnings or even an umbrella to offer respite. All intentions of a lovely glass of local wine while overlooking the beautiful brooke were therefore shattered.

Secondly, yes it was great to have a cob of bread provided, even though it had been purchased on special at Woolworths supermarket ( hardly gourmet or luxury) but its attraction quickly waned when we noticed the use by date - it had expired! Hmmmm. Not a very good omen.

Thirdly, yes I understand the expectation that guests cut down on the housekeeping for the owners by doing all of the washing up and tidying up in the kitchen, which we certainly did. However, I also have an expectation of clean premises and the proprietors need to take responsibility for the accumulation of dust and dirt between, for example, the end of the kitchen cupboards and the wall that juts out near the waste bin. Ditto for the blind in the bathroom.

Fourthly, The cabins urgently need insulation. I was kept awake by the snoring of the man in the adjoining cabin and also heard their alarm clock.

Fifthly, previous reviewers who complained about the paucity of bacon rations were lucky; at least they apparently were provided with a little. We had no eggs and no bacon. Definitely not what I expect from what purports to be a top class operation.

Overall, the experience was a disappointment.

It is interesting that over 90% of guests love our accommodation and these guests have found so many negatives.
Many unfounded. This is very disappointing to us.
The temperature the days they stayed, was 24 degrees, much cooler than Brisbane where they came from.
We therefore could understand why they lit the built in slow combustion heater the afternoon they arrived. They had it going all the next morning and left at lunch time to do the tourist things.
The cottage is insulated on every wall including the internal walls plus the ceiling. Insulation keeps you cool in summer and keeps the ambient heat in, when you have a fire going all day.
Therefore it would have been hot when they returned at the end of the day. Nobody else in six years has complained about the heat!

Not our normal practice but the bread was snap frozen on the day of baking.

We have many comments in our guest book stating how clean the cottages are. I don't understand this comment but will investigate.

There is 32mm of fire plaster plus industrial sound insulation between the two cottages. Again never a complaint in six years

These guests asked for a continental breakfast. We did provide bonus eggs.

We stayed in the Emily Cottage and were very impressed by the understated but classy decor, which has a real cosy and comforting feel to it. Location was gorgeous with babbling brook + ducks, just in front of the cottage. Fire was all set ready to light, and the heater was on as well, awaiting our arrival. Breakfast provisions were good - cereal, local lovely apple juice, bacon, farm fresh eggs, tomato, bread and jam/butter/milk. Good selection of CD's - we really felt at home and wished we had more than one night to enjoy it. Very warm and comfortable bed. Loved it and would definitely recommend, and will return there for a longer visit.

My husband & myself arrived at the Cottages and were thrilled to find them exactly as they appeared on their website. The countryside was as beautiful as pictured, and serene. Amazingly the location is truly only 20 minutes from Hobart and is conveniently central to many attractions. The cottages are gorgeous, outfitted with natural timber, soft carpet & french doors that could open right out (lovely for summer when I'm sure we could have heard the stream from inside). They have loads of natural light but blinds for privacy and they have living room area to spare. The promised breakfast provisions were indeed quality produce, and the fireplace already set to light up. The Manger, Gary, was a real character and even my husband, who generally likes to keep to himself during 'time away from work' enjoyed meeting him. Another bonus was once we moved into the cottages, we were left alone to enjoy. We had just arrived from another destination within Tasmania, also advertised via website, at which we were very disappointed as we found nothing was truly as advertised. It was so refreshing to have such beauty and comfort for such a reasonable price and so well organised. Also, the corner spa was much larger than usual and there was complementary port on offer in front of the fire. All in all, by the time we left we felt rejuvenated and actually intend to return for a much longer stay.
