“Repugnant Raffertys Resort - Disgusting1”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

We had a group of 10 families stay at the resort this past weekend and 9/10 rooms (cottages with lofts) were filthy! Dead cockroaches on floors, musty smells in every room, cockroach poo in the cutlery drawer, thick coated dust on every flyscreen, broken furniture and extremely dated, poor quality furnishings. The service was poor and when a young child accidently had an accident in the pool, the reception said " oh well, there's enough chemicals in the pool to deal with that". Meanwhile faeces was floating all around the pool - disgusting! The next day we awoke to a pool full of duck poo which also wasn't cleaned. One of group were robbed and reception couldn't care less, as if it were a regular occurance. We would NEVER stay or recommend anyone, particularly families to stay at this resort. It was like stepping back in time yet the rates reflect a contempary resort! What a joke..

Room Tip: No good rooms available - we booked 10 and they were all hideous!

On arrival (20/02/2012), I asked what restaurants would be opened, we were told that all the restaurants were closed on Monday nights, I complained that this was terrible for a resort not to have a restaurant opened for the guests. After going for a walk we found that the Thai restaurant was opened on Monday nights and this information was not forthcoming from the receptionist. The Thai restaurant does not receive any recommendations from the Reception Staff at The Resort. We arrived @ 2.30pm to find the garbage bins were all out for collection on the roadside for Tuesday morning and they stayed there all day until Wednesday morning when the workers returned them to the units. Found cockroaches in the kitchen cupboards & no dish drainer was supplied and no dishwasher available in the room that we had. The TV reception was quite poor for certain channels (Channel 5, 50 & 55 the worse, the channel 7 was also breaking up). The lounges were very uncomfortable to sit on. The bed could have been a lot better to sleep in. The units needing freshening up. The Grand M Hotel in Melbourne has extra padding on the mattress that may you feel that you were sleeping on a cloud. (exceptional comfort),we stayed there in Feb 10th to 13th 2012 for a girls Melbourne Trip.

Thank you for your feedback, we have recently employed a new member to the reception team and it is clear in this report that there are still some things that this person is not aware of. An induction to cover every aspect of the business is essential ensuring a prosperous future.

We have structured the business that there is at all times a restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch & dinner everyday. I must apologise if you were given the wrong information at anytime during your stay.

The bins are placed on the road weekly and we have recently had problem in respect to the collection of the waste. I will look into this, as this is not normal practice, as they are meant to be replaced the same day they are cleared.

Raffertys resort is a remote location and as such, has a lot of wild life that visit, it is recommended that door and fly screens remain shut to avoid any unwanted visitors. We also quarterly spray all units interior and exterior and as a result find that there is increased activity when doing so.

The room in which you stayed was a standard terrace, this type of accommodation does not come equipped with a dishwasher, however a dish drainer is standard and we will ensure that this room is equipped with one.

We are aware that there is a problem with the TV reception and have notified the Strata and believe that it is being rectified.

We are currently going through a refurbishment throughout the resort and as a result, have a few rooms that still require updates and changes. Unfortunately the room you stayed in is one of those rooms.

If you like the colour Beige, dated furniture complete with massive rips & tears....Rafferty's is the place for you!!
Firstly, we paid zip for our 2 nights accommodation at Rafferty's, (won it in a comp.) so in our case it was OK value, but if I'd have shelled out the 600 odd bucks for our 2 nights, I'd be pretty pissed.
We stayed in a 2bdm terrace, No. 419, I hope they aren't all like this, the furniture, kitchen & bathrooms were all about 10 yrs past there used by date. The shower came complete with a fan that sounded like Qantas flight QF2 to Singapore whilst taking off...only louder, and dustier, much dustier.
The maintenance dude must really like silicon...white silicon, clear silicon, even silicon with mould growing underneath, in case your wondering....there was lots of silicon in the shower cubicle.....lots.
That brings me to the Beige, beige walls, beige ceilings, beige architraves, beige door jams, beige tiles, just about the only thing that wasn't beige was the grey and black dirty marks on the walls.
Ever stayed in accommodation where the lounge has a massive great tear in it?....We have! Might have it engraved on my tombstone.
Seriously, this mob need to have a long hard look at themselves if they think it's OK to let out a unit with furniture in this state.
The setting of the resort is really nice, but we were a bit disturbed by a sign on the boat ramp telling us to wear shoes whilst in the lake, and to make sure we take a shower afterwards....WTF? Reminded me of the 3 eyed fish episode of the Simpson's.

So anyway, we used the pool which was great, I even loaded up my wallet with a fat wad of cash looking forward to enjoying the cocktails from the bar. After browsing the cocktail menu, we decided on some Margarita's....the menu said it contained 30mls of tequila and 30mls of Contrieu, so I was surprised when the bar tender by passed the bottle of Contrieu, for a bottle of "Triple Sec"??, when i quizzed why we weren't getting the contents as described on the menu, the bartender replied..."because we save the Contrieu for the shots"...so, needless to say, not another cent was spent at the bar....and the margaritas we did have were weak, tasteless and just crap value....pretty much like the whole place.

Don't bother with the restaurants, give the Swansea RSL Club a call, they'll send out a bus and pick you up, then when you've had enough to eat and drink....they'll drop you back at your unit, try the chilli squid at the Swansea RSL Club....sensational.

My rating?.....Crapola, don't bother.

Room Tip: Mecure only manage a small portion of the units, do a little investigating and you might get a bette...

Thank you for your feedback.

We are currently going through a refurbishment throughout the resort and as a result have a few rooms that still require updates and changes, unfortunately this room is one of those rooms.

Our lead in rate for a Standard Terrace that sleeps four, exactly like the one that you stayed in, is $199 per night. Not sure where 600 dollars came from.

Thank you for the feedback in regards to the extract fan not working – I have notified the maintenance department and this has since been fixed.
I have taken note of all housekeeping issues and will deal with all those responsible, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We recommend wearing shoes in Lake Macquarie as razor clams have been known to be found in the lake and we are merely looking after the well being of our guests.

You shower to remove perspiration from your body along with sunscreen, perfume, deodorant and other substances we might put on our body. The ammonia in the sweat and urine combine with the chlorine to make chloramines which cause the eye burn and odors you get in a pool.

I have questioned the barmen on his cocktail menu skills and practices as this is not our standard procedure and agree if the menu says Contreau then that is what it should be.

Raffertys has 2 restaurants that have excellent feedback in regards to service, food and atmosphere from many of our guests that frequently dine at the resort. So it is with great disappointment that you can judge the restaurants with a single purchase of a margarita without even tasting the food or experiencing the service whilst dining in the restaurant.

Mercure Lake Macquarie Raffertys Resort managers over 100 terrace/units and have to date refurbished three quarters of these units.

All feedback is taken as constructive, and will use this in ensuring that there is continued training in respect to cleaning and the constant push to refurbish all the rooms.

My husband, 11yr old son and myself stayed for 3 nights in a TreeTop Terrace Townhouse. The service on arrival was very friendly and very informative about the area.
The apartment was immaculately clean and well presented with a quiet and peacfull terrace balcony overlooking the arboretum. Be aware that the beds are very hard, so if you are used to a soft bed, be prepared.
We loved the lake for kayak hire and there were plenty of amenities with a very good variety of activites for children in the holidays. However, being school holidays it was extremely busy especially the pools. That is the biggest disappointmentfor us with this resort - yes it does have 4 pools but 2 are very small, the indoor pool is quite dirty with too much chlorine and the resort pool is not big enough to cater for the amount of visitors and properties on site. The Restarant Lago was very nice and pizzas were great (Take away option fantastic). So overall the accommodation was good, but for us, was let down by its pools. If we were to come again, it would be out of school holidays.

Room Tip: TreeTop Terrace 508+ seem quieter and have a lovely natural terrace balcony lookout.
