“A little slice of heaven in the rainforest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2007

The Kewarra Beach Resort is about 15 minutes north of Cairns Airport, situated between Cairns and Palm Cove. On arrival you are met with a lovely fruit punch drink whilst your baggage is taken to your room (Moud). There are varying types of Moud - Rainforest, Lagoon or Beachfront. We had a Rainforest (Pandanous Moud). The staff escort you through the grounds to your Moud and ensure you are settled. The Moud was of a very good size with beautiful wood flooring (honeymooners beware, any bed movement may make alot of noise on that floor)!!! All doors and windows are netted to keep out any unwelcome visitors! The Bathroom is also of a good size with bath and separate shower. TV, Tea/Coffee facilities, hairdryer, safe, clock radio all provided. The decor did look a little dated, but it was all good quality and in good condition. The only negative was the Air Con unit - it was very noisy. Fortunately we didn't really need it, and there are ceiling fans in both the bedroom and bathroom which are quite effective. We found the Moud a little dark inside and needed the lights on but hey we had booked a room in a rainforest so yes, it is a little buried in undergrowth! The groundsmen were busy chopping away so the grounds are well maintained. The restaurant is a large open thatched area where we found the staff to be superb and very attentive. Breakfast is buffet style, however you can also opt for a full cooked choice. The evenings meals were of a very high standard and the menu offered a good range of choices. Main courses averaged approx $AU35. The hotel has two pools. The larger of the two, which is near the restaurant, has a swim through cave , spa pool and waterfall and the smaller pool is split with a waterfall separating the two. Both pools provide towels and also have a telephone to enable you to order drinks or food to be brought to you. There is also a large lagoon (not for swimming) where the ducks, fish & turtles reside. The hotel provides bread at the edge of the lagoon for guests to feed them - kids will enjoy this. The beach is very quiet and a couple of hammocks are provided. Again a cabin on the beach provides towels & that handy phone for drinks! There is also a laundry on site with washing machines, dryers & irons available for guests to use. Washing powder can be purchased from reception $AU1.50. Very handy if you are travelling around the country and restricted on clothing. Make use of the dryers, things take a long time to dry in this area. We hired a car however didn't feel it was really necessary as the hotel operates a shuttle to both the airport and to Cairns centre. As the hotel is situated in a residential area there isn't really any shops or restaurants in walking distance (little supermarket with ATM about 5-10 minutes walk). If you book any trips the majority of them will pick you up directly from Kewarra Beach. There is a little souvenir shop in reception where you can also book a variety of trips/tours. We found all that staff to be very attentive and helpful. If I head back to this part of Australia again I will definately be staying at Kewarra Beach!

The resort is made up of little chalet's or moud's as they are called at the resort that are finished to the highest level with granite bathrooms and wood furnishing throughout. Each Moud is located either on a lagoon or overlooking your own piece of rainforest allowing you almost complete privacy.

The welcome by the staff can not be faltered after your complementary pick-up from the airport and the cocktail when you arrive. Our room was ready when we arrived at 9am which made recovering from an overnight flight so much easier.

You can either eat in the dinning area which looks out into the mass of ferns, bamboos and other native species, or we had some of their picnics which are to be recommended which can be eaten on your balcony area or on the resorts private beach.

If you wish to laze on the beach or take a trip to Kuranda, the Great Barrier Reef or many other attractions the staff will be able to help you. There are two very helpful ladies who organise any trips you might want to go on and their help is priceless.

I would strongly recommend this resort as it is so pieceful and cut away from the chaos of modern life but close enough to reach the boat to the great barrier reef and all the other attractions.

Our group of 16 family and friends stayed at Kewarra on the 3rd of August for 2 nights. The staff at Kewarra was a delight to work with. Of everyone I worked with throughout Australia for our 15 night trip., they were the most responsive and the most pleasant. There was very little follow-up required on my part to make all of the arrangements. We were picked up at the airport and on arrival at Kewarra met with very nice fruit drinks. The gardens, pools, ponds and public rooms were great and the food was very good. The rooms were good, though I do think the mattresses could be improved. The bathrooms had been recently re-done and were very nice. We had a full menu selection dinner beachside and a bbq in the lawn area. They did have to bring in temporary help to serve our group and those servers could have had more experience. Their pastry chef prepared a very large Pavlova cake and served it to us himself. It was incredible both to look at and to eat! We went back for seconds and his service was just the best in every way. The location of Kewarra worked very well. Our young adults hung out at the beach and we didn’t need to worry about them. It was reasonably close to activities, and easy to get back to Cairns for the cruise. Several of us had the two bedroom suites which were great for getting together. Next time I think I would prefer one of the Pipi Mouds facing the beach.

  • Liked — The rainforest setting next to the beach
  • Disliked — The matress, I would have liked it to be firmer.

We had planned to stay for 11 nights at Kewarra in June and ended up leaving after half the stay was over. The rainforest ambience is nice, the grounds are well kept, and the sunrise on the beach is beautiful (we had a beach bungalow). However, the resort is overpriced compared to other beachfront properties in north Queensland. The facilities are faded and a bit dated; I would say this is a 3-star property rather than a 5-star property. Two things bothered us in particular: first, the management does everything to see that you are stuck at the resort for mealtimes in order to be forced to eat at the overpriced restaurant. Second, they try to get every cent out of the guest that they can, virtually nothing is free or included here (an exception is the wifi access at the reception). Most amazing is the fact that they charge 12 dollars just to be shown around the grounds by the resort gardener, in every other place I have been this would be free. The Kewarra does not offer value for the money.

This resort was truely fabulous, set in the beautiful surrounds of a tropical rain forrest. The staff were amazing. No matter who you dealt with, from reception, to restaurant staff, bar staff, just every body was so helpful in what ever you needed.
They were always happy to see you, offered tips and advise freely and with eagerness I have not seen in hotel staff before. If asked to nominate employye of the month, I would find this very difficult, because they were all equally as excellant as each other. They can be proud of themselves, and the great fun they have in sharing the beautiful surroundings they work in.
I would recommend this resort to anyone wanting a relaxing, fun and wanting to spoiling themselves.
