Positives:
1. Less expensive and more charming than the Huaxi
2. It is located next to a water park also called Sanxianshan with beautiful pagodas, jade and wood carving exhibitions and a 3 minute walk to the sea. Spectacular!
3. Single rooms are more spacious and more costly than double rooms. Oddly, cost is based on the room size and is counter intuitive since double rooms are usually larger in the US.
4. You feel like a princess from the Ming Dynasty in a room of red and gold silk, elaborate antiques with fresh fruit to welcome you each day in your room.
5. If you are on a budget, can speak Mandarin and want to “feel” Chinese, this is the hotel for you.
6. There are marvelous jade and antique collections throughout the hotel.

Negatives:
1. Even though they place food in steam table pans, they don't light the burners, consequently their food handling practices need improvement. Breakfast buffet was not very appetizing for Americans but then again this is a traditional Chinese hotel.
2. Checking in and out takes forever as no one speaks English. They charged our credit cards 2000 rmb upon arrival. Then they charge you the actual charge when you check out and say a refund will be made to your card in 5-7 days (one would hope). Not a good practice since follow up would be impossible. Giving them cash upon arrival might be easier.
3. Suggest you bring your own pillow or pillow case because the pillows are uncomfortable seed pillows covered in a brocade which is not comfortable to sleep on. The linens or bath robes did not seem freshly laundered. I think they cater mostly to the Chinese traveler. There are many Penglai hotels to choose from... The Chateau State Guest House where you stay in Pagodas surrounded by water, may be a better, although much more expensive choice. Chateau State Guest House's food, service and wine were 5 star.

Don't miss seeing the Ancient Chinese Ship Museum - fascinating!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks water park and pagodas

We stayed for 4 nights and the hotel is very beautiful with huge rooms in antique style and very friendly staff. The wood-carvings and other decorations are amazing. The staff were very friendly and service-oriented. Very few can speak English but they would find us one who did when needed. The only let-down was the restaurant, there were no menus in English and we had to choose from a board with very blurred photos of each dish - it was a guessing game! Whilst we are adventurous and prefer to try the local cuisine, the food was only average. The only problem we had in our stay was food poisoning, which we attributed to the first breakfast. The breakfast food sits out for a number of hours in a tepid state, with no warmers for the hot items or refrigeration for the cold ones. After that we stuck to black coffee, toast and boiled eggs.
The hotel bar run by friendly Jeff, who is French is recommended. He also made a fantastic pizza which was really appreciated given our problems in the restaurant.
