We had lunch at Il Guado during a day trip at Civitella Alfedena (two adults, two young kids) on a Sunday. The restaurant was not full when we got there (12.40), but it eventually filled up during our LONG lunch. It took over 40 minutes for the starters to arrive, and almost 1.5 hours to get the first course. We gave up the second courses and asked for the bill. The staff was friendly, but definitely under dimensioned for the crowd (the pieces of a broken glass stayed on the ground for over one hour, until a SECOND glass fell down and then they cleaned both), although they mentioned one waitress being sick. Still, the service was really too slow.
As for the food, starters were ok (we took antipasto alla Guado and antipasto di selvaggina), with very good ricotta. First courses were average: the strozzapreti with sausage and zafferano were not as tasty as one would expect, and same was true for the pappardelle with pecorino cheese.
The location was nice, recently renovated.

Kind sir.
If the staff was little it was because the period did not require it and then suddenly filled up the room and we the waiters we give the best together with the kitchen to please everyone.
Not personally note but drops a glass and complains that it does not blow you right away !!!
mah
I do not understand why I order it in Italian and then I review it in English !!!

GOOD LIFE

It was one of the few times when me and my husband had a disagreement in our honeymoon: as we were spending two days in Civitella Alfedena, I wanted to go to the Transumante again in the next day, but my hubbie wanted to try a new restaurant, because we were traveling, and he wanted to try new things and... ok, I agreed with him but we commited the fatal error of taking the advise of our hotel host on what restaurant should we go. Bad, bad decision.

When we arrived at the place, it was covered in deers heads (badly taxidermized or badly conservated or both), deer bones and a gigantic emoldured newspaper with (restaurant reviews? noooooo) the notice of the sinking of the Titanic. It was also dank and empty (ok, it was low season and a small town, but if a few more lights were on maybe it wouldn´t look so creepy). The place looked as if an horror movie could be shot right there, right now.

Uh, ok, we should really have left just then, but maybe that horrid atmosfere only meant that they were specialized in venison and maybe the Titanic manchete was a homage to a dear relative that lost their live in the naufrage or something. Maybe they were ecoconscious and tried to avoid lights so not to waste energy. We went on.

I asked for a seat as far away from the door as possible, as I´m REALLY allergic to cigarette smoke ("really" as in I´ve been through four anaphilatic crises and one cardiac arrest, need to take huge dosages of medicaments daily and can´t count how many times I´ve been hospitalized because of it. Ah, and I normally have to wear a carbon-filtered mask in the streets, to keep the chemicals of passerby smokers away from my lungs, but one can´t wear a mask while eating). I do ask that always, as people often smoke right at the door in restaurants. The waitress disliked the idea, and I explained why I didn´t want an outdoor seat. I didn´t realize at the time, but I had gained an enemy.

We asked for the venison sausages (yes, at least they served venison) as an entrée. We also had a second plate of something that was suposed to be some kind of meat, but was black and leather-like. I think we had a first plate, also, but I can´t remember what it was, except that it was the best portion of the meal. I couldn´t finish my plate, but my husband did finish his.

Ok, it was cheap. Or really really expensive, considering what happened next.

We asked for the bill, payed and were leaving. I didn´t had my mask yet. We were going to the door. We opened the door. The waitress (which we had tipped, worst use of money ever) was expecting us outside. With a cigarrete. Which smoke she blow right out at my face as soon as I opened the door.

It would be a childish prank, if my allergy wasn´t as bad as it is. As it goes, I almost fell to my knees, and deciding that the priority was keeping me safe, my husband carried me to the hotel in his arms. I DO carry with me most of my allergies medicines (including an inhaler, corticoids and adrenaline), so between what was in my purse and what was in the hotel (the inhaler and broncodilatatory medicine) we were able to stop the crises.

And then it was my husband time to get sick: he got a bad case of food poisoning (that I probably didn´t get because the allergy made me puke the food out before anything) that kept him all night in the bathroom.

It was our worst experience in a restaurant in Italy. It also was the worst experience I EVER had in a restaurant anywhere. It was such an stark difference from the Transumante (the place were we went in the night before, and which as the most lovely restaurant of our honeymoon) that I can´t believe that the two places were so near in such an small town. Everything was awful, we both got sick, and if my allergic reaction was just a bit worst I could have been killed by a childish waitress that can´t be contraried on where the patrons of an empty restaurant are going to seat. If I could not give any stars in Trip Advisor rating system, I wouldn´t.

made both of us sick (I got sick because I´m allergic to cigarrete smoke and the horrid waitress upon hearing that, decided to blow smoke in may face. He got sick because of food poisoning.). I´m not writing a review

We stayed at the enclosed B&B (named Gli Orti) and had dinner in the Restaurant. We found the Restaurand very good for food choice and quality. The ambience is also very nice. The village itself is surely worth a visit as it is still authentic. All and all an excellent choice for your lunch/dinner in the area
