We had a two night break at Thornleigh and will certainly be back. We know this area very well and usually stay in a local hotel but from now on will choose this lovely house. It is so comfortable and spacious and has a very welcome warmth for such a large property. We had sunshine but also snow during our stay and were very thankful for the cosiness of the house.
The Arts and Crafts furnishings are in keeping with the property and added interest to our stay. A 'Welcome Pack' was a most unexpected bonus. The location is perfect, stunning views and peaceful. There's lots to explore nearby- forestts, sandy beaches, wildlife. The Clonyard Hotel is very welcoming to non residents and The Anchor Hotel has a lovely spot in the village. The food is good but unfortunately the service is often exceptionally slow. Be sure to walk the road to the village and see the quirky driftwood sculptures erected by a local resident. Magical!

this was a 3 day break myself, hubby and two 18 yr olds and a rather enthusiastic dog. was worried about taking the young dog it was the first trip with her - there was no need to worry as the house had a large enclosed garden where she was quite happy to mooch. As you entered the back door their was a utility room that was ideal for her to sleep.
The house was more than I expected large rooms with great views. The furnishing were tired but seemed in keeping with the house, the second living room could do with a comfy couch, also maybe a second double bed. It looks like a couple of the single beds need new mattresses ( a bit springy)
The kitchen was well equipped but maybe a sort through the cupboards to throw away the chipped crockery other than that I can not praise this holiday let enough. Great house, great location FAB, FAB,, FAB. the Steamboat Inn is worth a visit for a nice meal as is the Anchor Inn both dog friendly. Kirkcudbright is also worth a visit, Nearby Beeches worth visiting Rockcliffe and Sandy Hills Beech . Great for a chilled break and can't wait to return

Excellent place. Loads of room, fantastic setting and brilliant biking! The only issue was that the showers had really low pressure, so after a days biking they weren't brilliant unfortunately. Otherwise great spot and would love to go back.

“Fantastic New Year”

We stayed for 4 nights 30.12.14 - 3.1.15 , group of 6 friends including two 12 year old boys and a dog.
The location is stunning, beautiful and peaceful. The house was perfect, quirky and different. A little tired in places, poor pressure for the showers and would benefit from a comfy sofa in the smaller sitting room, but this was absolutely unbeatable value for money. We walked the woodland path into Rockcliffe where there was a bonfire on the beach on New Year's Eve. When the tide is out there is also a lovely walk along the causeway to Rough Island where there is a nature reserve.
We had arranged for a Tesco delivery and cooked in the large, well equipped kitchen and only ate out once at The Anchor Inn. The pub is a 10 minute walk away and is child and dog friendly with lovely food.
Very helpful and friendly email info from the owner however there was some confusion over picking up the key as it didn't quite turn out as expected but this was soon rectified and the cleaner arrived with a small welcome pack of milk, tea, coffee, bread and wine which was very much appreciated.
Central heating, TV, WiFi, dishwasher , washing machine all present but take your own loo roll. There is a small shop a short walk away, but this is more of a gift shop than grocers
I would be very happy to return to Thornleigh.

“Beautiful and civilised house in pretty location”
Reviewed 17 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

This was sadly only a 2 night stay over a weekend but all of us wished it had been longer. The house inside was beautifully and tastefully furnished and decorated with interesting paintings and prints; it had some relatively old-fashioned plumbing but always functional and some very new too. Wonderful full-scale balcony on upper floor main bedroom. Gardens were interesting with views of interesting river at its end and it was situated on private road gently leading to beaches, walks to Rockcliffe and to a good bar and restaurant. The owner couldn't have been more helpful with e-mails providing extra information we needed. All 6 of us in the family simply loved it and are likely to be back.
