The location is beautiful. Small town Austria with wonderful rooms featuring heated floors was amazing. Honestly this place was a hit minus the 200 euro price tag for one night, and the smoke filled hallways. The restaurant downstairs was wonderful and so was the service. Our baby needed to take a nap and the front desk let us stay until 3 to accommodate her (unheard of and so amazing!).

There is no doubt I would recommend this hotel if you have the extra money to spend. Dead of winter it is a no-brainer to stay here with the coziness of the room. If you are American it might feel 3 star but for a European hotel it is 4 close to 5.

Is this heaven? No, it's Gaming. OK, so I stole those lines from the movie Field of Dreams, but the exact same could be said of Gaming, Austria. Nestled in the hills of the Alps, The Kartause is a 13th Century Carthusian Monastery that has been restored by the architect Walter Hildebrand since 1983. It is home to the branch campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio.
The hotel is magnificent and allows a wary traveler the chance to not only rest and relax, but be transported into a time long gone where life was much more simple. The quiet, humble, and peaceful spirit of the Cathusian monks that prayed here for so long in silence can be felt in the beauty of the surrounding hills and the deep blue skies. The hotel is perfectly located for a retreat get-away and is very reasonably priced for the accommodations you will receive.
The rooms are loaded with the most comfortable beds, fluffy down pillows and fluffy down blankets. We slept with the windows open (in the winter!) and sank down low in the bed with the warmth of the bed like the clouds of heaven encompassing us.
The small restaurant attached to the hotel, the Johannastüberl or the Gwölb were great places to eat; the Johannastüberl was quiet and comfy while the Gwölb definitely gave a more Medieval feel to the meal (like being transported back in time!).
There is plenty of hiking in the area as well as winter skiing at Lackenhof just up the road about 20 minutes.
The staff was exceptionally warm and helpful and one lady even made a special trip to the store to get two bottles of Pfirsich-Spritzer (sparkling peach wine- yum!) for us since we were not going to be back in Gaming before the stores closed. This hotel gets my highest recommendation!

The hotel is exceptionally well located - in the old 12th century abbey, the place is amazingly beautiful and quiet. The rooms are small, with almost no decoration, very rational design, but meticulously clean and comfortable. The staff is helpful, the restaurant is nice. The only bad point - no internet connection in rooms.
Overall the hotel is excellent but a bit pricey.

I spent one night at this hotel during a corporate team building event. The room i was in was very comfortable and quite spacious. The restaurant at the hotel was also quite good, but nothing over the top.
What really impressed me throughout my stay was the sense of calm and serenity in the area. The location is wonderful with many beautiful sights around. It is an excellent base to use if one wishes to pursue outdoor activities such as hiking and possibly rafting.
