Owner description: Tawhiti MuseumWidely acclaimed as one of the most innovative museums in New Zealand, Tawhiti uses life size exhibits and scale models to capture the past in a series of super-realistic displays. All the displays – including the life size figures created from moulds cast from real people – are designed and built on the premises. Whether the subject is shipping, farming, railways, or just a small corner of a colonial kitchen, the attention given to research and detail is the same. “I hope my enthusiasm for local history comes through the displays. I’m particularly aware of drawing children into our exhibits – they mustn’t feel museums are old buildings, full of old dusty junk. Historical display should be exciting and relevant – I’m always looking for more creative ways of making it just that” Nigel Ogle.

Not to be missed museum, not only for the displays but for the wonderful models in the dioramas such stunning details. Allow plenty of time to appreciate all that the museum has to offer. You can pop in and out once your hand is stamped, enabling you visit Mr Badgers cafe!

Visited this place twice and it was closed. Well worth going to though, fascinating and very interesting about the surrounding area and history, great place for kids too.

Now this is a museum not to be missed. It lived up to its reviews of "stunning". We spent all afternoon here and will certainly go back to see more of it. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

“Magnificent, Must-See more than just a museum!”
Reviewed 13 February 2017

If you are travelling around New Zealand you must put Tawhiti Museum on your visiting list. It is an amazing place to experience early New Zealand life, mostly rural activities but enhanced with multiple dioramas to capture your attention and hold you entranced as you visit the many many display rooms or take the train ride into the past or the boat ride to have the past revealed to you in amazing replicas of the times.

After driving by plenty of times I decided to stop & see what all the talk is about.. you could spend a full day here! Lots to see and read, great history & everything is in immaculate condition. A must visit if your in south Taranaki. Boat ride extra $15 only a couple of minutes but quite good. Heaps of parking across the road
