We were speechless when we saw the outdoor bath. Arrived January 8, 2018
Got the free shuttle from Jomo-Kogen station (it’s a big coach bus in the parking lot). We’re given out free yukatas (soft cotton robes) to wear the rest of our stay which added an extra something to the experience.
Our first trip to the baths was magical. We didn’t bother with the indoor ones. The outdoor baths were mixed gender which is nice. Took some getting used to with the full nudity thing. It we got there.
It was snowing, big fluffy snowflakes, a slight chill and a warm bath. Pure magic.
Dinner was fantastic, a Kaiseki style meal with a buffet as well meant we went to bed stuffed. Breakfast was another buffet style meal. Lunch is not provided but there’s a small shop for snacks. Honestly we weren’t doing much in the day so didn’t really get hungry.
In winter there’s not much by way of hikes, it I’m told in the summer there are some walks. The town is quite far so unless you have a car you can’t get there.
One of my photos of the main building after hours is truly what it looks like, no filters, no photoshop.
The ryokan style is beautiful. Took some getting used to with the futons on the floor but we learned to love it. We didn’t have dinner in our rooms but I think some packages had that.
Only issue was that of WiFi. It’s through FREESPOT, a free provider in japan but we had issues connecting. My iPad connected and the speed was pretty good, about 8mbps down but our other devices would not connect. If the hotel had their own dedicated WiFi it would’ve been perfect. But a tech detox was kind of nice too!
English is quite good at the hotel. They even helped us book a sushi dinner in Tokyo! And silly me, forgetting my travel adapter, they provided us one for our stay :)

48 hours of eating, sleeping, bathing, reading, relaxing. The dream.

We spent Christmas 2017 here. We got lucky and had a perfect snowy Christmas Day, which turned the property into a truly glorious winter wonderland. The onsen cannot be overrated - it really is stunning, and I would definitely recommend a winter visit (though I haven't visited in the summer): nothing can beat sitting in the hot springs at dawn or dusk as the snow falls.

I traveled with a vegetarian, who warned the ryokan, and ate well. I on the other hand had to contend with some dishes that were slightly beyond me - stewed baby octopus and other mysteries - and yes, I refused the bear soup. The restaurant is definitely for the adventurous!

Room Tip: You want a room overlooking the river...

Superb mixed onsen (which is super rare), you can easily access from Tokyo thinking well to take their free shuttle!

Lost in the middle of the mountains, you will have the right to beautiful outdoor baths along the river day and night, all in a comfortable hotel. The Japanese style room is very spacious and comfortable and a traditional dinner will be served there. Once the meal is over, we will install your futons (it is above all a ryokan!).

A very beautiful place!
