The bus service only runs for a few weeks in August and one week in mid September. You can easily hitch hike from / to the 5 Lakes but it is not really worth it.
I passes there after hiking the Shiretoko traverse and Io Zan (see my other review about it).

These shallow lukewarm waterfalls flow gently over smooth rock and it is fairly easy to walk up them. The leaflet from the tourist office said no private cars in summer, but we drove there without problem. The road was closed beyond the falls, though. There were several deeper pools, which might have been nice for a dip, but we stuck to the shallow water. Apparently the water is strongly acidic but even though I tend to have sensitive skin, I was absolutely fine. As you get a bit higher up it does get steeper and a bit more tricky, but the highest part of the falls is currently closed, with a tape showing how far up you can go. It is a fairly long drive on from the Five Lakes, on a poor road, but it is a fun thing to do, especially with children.

These are relatively flat and shallow falls which visitors can walk in. The water is lukewarm, no doubt from a nearby hotspring. The route there is quite long (11km one way) on gravel roads, somewhat long for a single attraction.

After one hundred hot onsens all around, this is good to go, walk on the rocks (not so much danger if you take care) and then swim in the little places which are warm but of course less hot than the onsen.

Watch out, it's slippery, although incredibly, many young folks were traipsing up in flip flops, crocs, bare feet! There are several sections to the waterfall – you drive right up to the base, park your car, climb up a steep small slope, strip your boots and then walk up directly on the flat rock sections that make up the waterfall. Climb up one or two sections and you reach a small pool, after this it's a steep climb that we didn't do (but that many others did, coming down with great difficulty, a few squeal, but all safe, unbelieveably). I don't think I'm that sure-footed, so gave that a miss, and still managed to almost slip on an algal rock on the way back down!

The rock you walk on is smoothened out from the waterfall, and interestingly, looked like purple granite with white seams. Fun and one-of-a-kind experience. We drove out back the way we came, which was a shame – we later figured out that if we had continued driving down the road to the end (towards the Shiretoko Peninsula), this was prime bear watching road – which explained why they were giving out bear safety leaflets at the carpark.
