After a 30mn walk in the forest you find a big group of snow monkey enjoying onsen. Bathing and/or drinking the hot water instead of tea!

The Monkey Park (Yaen-koen) is in the middle of nowhere... well, it is a nature reserve. Really, visiting it was one of the best experiences in my life. Monkeys are very cute and they literally do not care about tourists around, they swim, groom, keep searching for food etc. It is hard do describe with words, it is just amazing and I never got bored of watching them.

When planning your trip, remember the "Snow Monkey Pass" which is a combined ticket that includes unlimited use of Nagaden trains and buses between Nagano and Yamanouchi and also includes admission to the monkey park for 3200 yen. It can be purchased at Nagaden Nagano Station.

After getting off the bus a 30-40 minutes walk follows, which is trough a nice forest area, though proper footwear is recommended. In case you do not have appropriate clothing, you can rent equipment (boots, gloves etc.) at the beginning of the path leading to the park. In the park area eating is prohibited neither can you buy foodstuffs. But, as they provide hot water in the building it may be wise to bring tea leaves and/or cup noodles which you can prepare easily and eat in the shelter.

Absolutely worth the trip! Teenage kids also loved it. The monkies were playing and completely oblivious to the fact that there were people watching them. Spend one night in the area and take in the tradition of an onsen. One night is all you need and a couple of hours at monkey park.

A really nice walk leads up to the snow monkeys (about 1.5km up a slight slope through the forest).
There are monkeys everywhere, wrestling and all sorts. As we went at the end of March, it was too warm for the monkeys to bathe in the springs. This could be made clearer when booking.
But it was still great to see the monkeys ‘hanging around’ near the hot springs.

The park is pretty far away from basically everywhere but its one of those trips that are worth planning. You have to walk 2 km before you reach it but its really nice walk in super big pinetrees surrounding. Monkeys run around freely and you can observe them from really close range. The park is small so the whole trip wont take you super long time.
It was warm during our visit so we didnt see them bathing in super warm onsens though .. i guess its a winter thing for them :)
