Came with family on mother’s day evening for a lovely meal. The staff were polite and helpful the food was delicious particularly the beef cheeks and the lamb shank.Very prompt service on a busy night and not too bloated after three courses, the only fly in the ointment being the lukewarm coffee but otherwise excellent

On a cold Saturday in February we found ourselves looking for lunch in picturesque Wark. According to Trip Advisor there appeared to be two choices and The Battlesteads had real keen appeal.

The bar was deserted when we entered but we followed the sound of clinking crockery through the empty restaurant and into a delightful bright conservatory where almost all of the tables were full.

Service was swift and attentive, menus were proffered, apologies were offered for the lamb wrap not being available. The menu offered a varied choice, with emphasis on locally sourced produce and artisan providers. They have awards for sustainability and emphasis is on quality and food miles.

We both selected gammon with hand cut chips. It arrived promptly and was excellent, thickly cut and succulent it had a beautiful flavour, it was topped with a fried hens egg, chips were excellent and the accompanying salad was well dressed and nicely presented.

The restaurant and adjoining hotel are very nicely decorated, staff are efficient and unobtrusive, a quick check that everything was ok than we were left to enjoy our meal in peace.

We were tempted by the exceptional cheeseboard but decided another time! As we intend to return to visit the dark sky observatory which is a feature of the hotel.

The Burns night experience is Michelin class from start to finish. My only issue is that I. Ant visit every Burns night. The food is stunning, the staff attentive and welcoming and the prices super super value for the quality. Can’t recommend this place highly enough

Having dismissed an hotel up the road in Bellingham we booked a table for 2 for our anniversary meal. We had no real idea what to expect - we only hoped it would be better than the alternative.
And, by all that's delicious, it was not only better, it was superb!
The restaurant was warm, inviting and not very full and we had a little table away from other diners. (This, in itself, was unusual. Restaurants seem to like to cluster people together so that there is a little knot of eaters coralled by the surrounding empty tables. Less walking for the servers I suppose.)
The welcome was good and felt genuine: they were pleased we were there.
The menu was a bit unusual but our choices turned out to be hot, delicious and filling. The wine choice was fine and not outrageously overpriced. (We were driving and they were totally relaxed when asked for the screw-top for our bottle so we could finish it later.)
So, if you're in the area, make a point of going there to eat - you'll enjoy it and they'll enjoy you being there.

We stayed locally and visited here for Sunday evening meal. Pleasantly surprised, welcoming friendly staff, interesting menu, excellent food and great service.
We had considered booking to stay here but had expected it to maybe be a bit ‘doggy’ as it promotes itself as ‘dog friendly’. However we asked the Manager Morag and she explained that yes they accommodate dogs but in designated accommodations, so they have ‘non-dog’ rooms as well. Worth knowing because it’s very nice, the staff are great and we would stay here...
