We went here as a special treat. The venue was lovely light-up outside and clean. We walked in to the main reception and got ignored by the receptionist on duty. As we entered the restaurant area, we got greeted by a lovely lady, that seated us straight away. For a Friday night we were by far the youngest couple in the room. Meal was served by 3 different staff and most time it felt a little left alone in the restaurant. There were about 7 tables booked but it seemed understaffed, which was confirmed once we realised there were 2 wedding parties going on a big reset for another function. It was not the great experience why we chose this place. The food quality is what we rated as much higher and the service side let this down.

We stayed here for the night on Boxing Day. We are only 30 minutes away so despite the rainy and almost snowy conditions we arrived. We last visited here over 20 years ago. Then it was famous for the place where Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence ran off to have a candle lit affair. The place was entirely lit by candle light and it was wonderful. We ate at the hotel last time and it was a meal to enjoy. There was a lovely chill-out lounge at one end of the building with relaxing sofas and open fires.
How things have changed! No more candles! Probably fire regs made them be snuffed out. The Chilston Park has turned into a very ordinary hotel.
We had a double room up the stairs facing to the front of the house. The bed was big and comfortable but a bit dingy and dark.
It was winter though and it might look entirely different with sun pouring in through the windows. We ate in the restaurant in the evening, the fillet of beef was delicious. It was very busy that evening.
I was hoping for more and sadly it does not retain the glamour and decadence of its heyday. It has gone from special to mediocre. That is not good in my book.

Dear Di B,

It sounds like you have some lovely memories of a previous stay at Chilston Park and it is a shame that this stay did not live up to your memories of 20 years ago.

The hotel is a wonderful property steeped in history, some glamorous for sure! Moving with the times, we have adapted and improved the facilities and hopefully the next time you return, you will feel a bit more of the history recreated.

Please feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss your feedback further, cbone@handpicked.co.uk

This is a very relaxing place to stay, out in the Kent countryside. What stands out, in hindsight, is the really high level of service with the staff. This is an older manor house, with accompanying outbuildings which for the most part have been converted into rooms. Some of the rooms are on the small side, and difficult to access, but the common areas are very well furnished with period furniture and paintings. There are lots of places to sit and relax and admire the views of the surrounding landscape. The food here is definitely worth the visit. The grounds are made for walking and strolling around and relaxing. They obviously host a lot of weddings here, I am not sure that I would want to be here when one is taking place, but certainly during the week, things are quiet. It is not far to Leeds Castle, this is a good place to stay if you want to spend a week exploring Kent . The only possible negative (and it is one reason why this place has so much charm in the first place) is that it is very difficult to find, even with a functioning GPS system, because the roads leading to Chilston Park tend to be quite small and narrow and generally are not marked with street signs....and there are a lot of them very close together, so that its easy to be on the wrong road and find yourself going in circles round the property. Many are sunken lanes so that you can not see "out" very easily to get your bearings. Don't let that deter you from staying here, just make sure that you don't try to arrive after the sun has set. Also, the stairways can be quite narrow and steep, so make sure that your room is a match with your level of athletic ability and the amount of luggage that you have. There is a very large car park in front of the main house. Be prepared to carry your roller bag, in general they don't perform well on gravel.

Room Tip: If you are not athletic or have a lot of luggage, you ought to consider a ground level unit.

Just returned from a two night Travelzoo break including dinners. Very comfortable stable conversion room. Excellent large bed and all amenities, including the little things some hotels now "forget". Anniversary break with champagne in the room, hocolates at turn-down service. Check-in easy with really helpful manager, Hannah Pitt. Restaurant Table d'Hote menu very good and included. Service attentive and unobtrusive. Beautifully prepared and served food. Good breakfast selection. Hotel a little remote but in a nice setting. Would visit again and highly recommended. Whilst it specialises in conferences and weddings, a spa addition would make it complete.
