Not only is this easily the best pub I’ve ever known for entertainment and hospitality, the food is extremely competitively priced and absolutely excellent. Huge portions and superb service. The decor is really lovely, a perfect place for ladies who lunch, and for a great party vibe in the evenings.

My mother, celebrating a family reunion this Easter with some having journeyed the breadth of England to meet up, decided to mark the occasion with a meal at The Black Horse and duly booked the area around the open fire which she was assured would be lit. However while it rained incessantly outside and we arrived wet and cold, no fire was met and duly told that the heating was on and that was enough. Food was ok, drinks fine but an empty restaurant with just us in and a chilly atmosphere all around will make us think twice of coming again.

Your comments are noted however, for the record, are not entirely accurate.
I took this booking and made no assurance that our log burner would be lit, which, in April, would be unusual - in fact our conversation concentrated on the fact that the fire place area would not be big enough for your party to dine comfortably. Your mother did state that she specifically wanted to sit in that area of the pub but did not specify that it was because she wanted the fire lit. I was also there on the day you arrived - it was indeed raining on this Spring day, but certainly not cold.
We do love our real fire but do not, of course, keep it going in warm weather. To have lit the fire - assuming we still had logs on site to do so - in addition to our central heating would have made the pub stifling and uncomfortable and was entirely unnecessary. We're sorry that you felt this was so unreasonable that it spoilt your visit.
It's not unusual for people to assume somewhere is always quiet because it happened to be at the time you were there but, as you will see from other reviews, we are a popular pub locally and we certainly advise anyone coming to dine to reserve in advance where possible.

The management know how to bring in the crowds. The cabaret this evening was David Van Day and Sue Moxley. First of all, we enjoyed a very good, tasty meal, before the cabaret started. The restaurant and the bar were both full, and....What a night !! The atmosphere was amazing. The entertainment was first class, with the whole audience singing and dancing the night away, with the singers moving amongst the audience. The waiting staff were attentive even once the cabaret had started, and we were not kept waiting for our drinks. The pub has regular cabaret evenings, and they are always good fun. The only slight negative comment is that there was only one fish dish on the menu, which was beer battered fish and chips. It would be nice to see more innovative fish on the menu, but this is a minor comment.

We were having an excellent night at this establishment, the entertainment was first class, the atmosphere was electric, we were really enjoying interacting and dancing with the other patrons. It all went wrong when the landlords decided spilling drinks and enthusiastic behaviour towards the entertainment was unacceptable, a drama ensued and our group was thrown out and barred from returning without warning, causing our group undeserved humiliation. Having since spoken to other locals and regulars it would appear this a regular reaction from the landlords to anybody behaving in any way other than stone cold sober.

I thoroughly recommend this “pub” if you are the type to only have a few drinks and enjoy the entertainment. If you are the type who likes to go to a pub and let your hair down then either go to a different pub or be extremely weary of your behaviour as the landlords are well known for kicking all people out for very trivial reasons bearing in mind it is a drinking establishment.

Thank you for highlighting that our pub is well managed!
It is true that, in accordance with the law, we will stop serving people who appear to be drunk and if their behaviour towards our performers and other customers becomes rude and anti-social they will be asked to leave. With 30 years experience in the pub trade, the last 6 at the Black Horse, we've found that the vast majority of our customers come to us specifically because they can rely on being able to have a great time without their enjoyment being spoilt but people unable to drink responsibly.

4 of us enjoyed a fabulous catch-up in this lovely establishment for a traditional Sunday lunch this afternoon. The food was delicious and we left feeling pleasantly plump. The staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. The decor is fabulous and the atmosphere perfect. We’ll be back in this cracking pub very soon.
