“Kennedy Nova - It's all right!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

We spent a week here on a bed and breakfast basis, in mid-February - in the middle of the coldest weather in Malta for decades! Fortunately, we're hardy Celts, and it was O.K.
The hotel is not 4 star by British standards, but we understood that from previous reviews. We used it as a place to sleep after long days of sightseeing, and were not concerned with evening entertainment or bar facilities. The hotel suited us very well. the staff were all friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff are outstanding. Our room was spotless, and we had fresh sheets twice during the week. The buffet breakfast is plentiful, if a little uninspired. We just needed a carbohydrate intake to keep us going until a late lunch, so it was good as far as we were concerned.
There was a considerable number of long-term, elderly, British residents. We're still independent travellers, but not many years away from "elderly", so this didn't bother us.
The hotel is conveniently located for buses - 15 minutes into Valletta, from where you can get anywhere, and 5 minutes walk to get the bus to Cirkewwa for the Gozo ferry.
All in all - it's not 4 star, but it's clean and convenient and, as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations, you'll enjoy it.

I only stayed here one night in feb 2012 through travelrepublic after arriving late, paying just 12 euro b/b which was very good value.the hotel is classed as 4 star although the room i had was very clean fresh and new the only natural light came from a large ventilation shaft in the centre of the building that the balconies look onto, but ok i expect if you want a lagoon/harbour view then a supliment will be payable ,my view you only sleep there so no big deal.the food is average bacon, eggs, toast, coffee, tea and juice. The location is probably the best thing about this hotel . Its situated on the strand which is a street about 1/2 mile long situated right next to the harbour. You can get a bus directly from the airport to the hotel no x2 its 2.20 euro one way but if your stopping for 5 or more days get a weekly ticket for 12 euro any bus any were any time this includes from and to the airport so its good value if you want to get out and about and explore, or you can pay daily 2.60 euro .The bus stops 50 metres from the hotel front door, ask driver, you can also get a bus directly to valetta ,the capital city from across the street.Outside the hotel there are many excursions on offer check the price and what your getting before committing yourself ,you can also get a ferry across the lagoon to valetta from here. After a buisy day sight seeing the hotel has a pool and sunbeds on the roof to relax and the view is amazing. My view of the hotel is good but i would not stop for longer than a week ,i would class malta as a sightseeing place with meal and a few drinks in the evening, there are restraunts ,cafes and bars close by there are no beaches and also avoid the busses at peak times as they can get very buisy Valetta has some amazing architecture and also a visit to see the firing of the mid day gun 12oclock mid day every day and a trip to the medina city is worth seeing

Booked the Hotel Fortina by phone ( I thought!?) after calling a lady in Malta via an emailed promo flyer, but ended up in the Kennedy ; 4 nights incl flights on 1/2 board, late Feb>2 March.

Read reviews after discovering the unasked-for switch, and was a little concerned at some of the reviews' content.

Oh well, we set off and got there OK via Ryanair and a bus from airport. Driver put us off in St Julian first time, but a nice Maltese lady jumped off the bus and made us re-board, as " the driver he wrong- it is a long way yet!" Bless her!

The Kennedy is located right on the front of Sliema, a stone's throw from the water's edge.

Unfortunately it is also on a busy dual-carriageway which makes a lot of traffic noise. The Maltese drivers are very courteous however, and only toot at each other, not pedestrians.

Checking in was brisk, unsmilingly perfunctory but efficient.

We had stopped whilst walking from bus stop at The Jubilee bar for some wine and (unexpected)yummy complementary snacks , to help wind down enroute to The Kennedy, so our mood was already relaxed for check-in.

Room on 6th floor was small but had a terrific view over the harbour and out towards Valetta.

Its balcony had a wee table and 2 chairs-good for lazy evenings watching the world go by.

The sun rose smack in the middle of the gap between Tigne Point and Valetta, superb!

Loads of boats from dinghies to giant superyachts moored, and stored ashore on Manoel Island - the view always made my day - so much to see.

Room fixtures were very basic, and many in need of repair- like jammed/sticking glass patio doors to balcony, broken lights, dodgy TV, and two very tired single beds shoved together to presumably make up our booked "double".

Bed linen was clean and neat.

Overall it was clean and tidy, and warm enough if one used the single hairy blanket from closet.

Lift to all floors was great.

Pool looked good too, but pool rooftop bar never opened. Boo hoo.
No cooling long cocktails up here, then. Why have a bar that stays shut 100%?

Reception was shiny , busy, and led into a buffet-syle dining room.

"Bar" in dining room was a joke.
Waiters would give or fetch a drink from it, or a bottle of wine to the table for sure, but it was not a place one could sit and have a drink with any sort of pleasant atmosphere to relax.
Busy traffic all the time with jostling buffet trays and plate-carrying diners!

Dining was rather harrowing , frankly. One jostled with everyone amiably enough, queuing for mystery dishes ( unlabelled) under stainless steel lids , some luke-warm and in bulk rows.

It all felt rather like eating in one's old noisy school dinner halls.

Still, it made for meetings and conversations with different people, and new friends.

The food was OK now and then. Always plenty of choice.

Quality of dishes was variable. Heat of food was wildly variable.

Some cooked dishes were occasionally very good, changing chefs perhaps responsible.

I noticed the personnel switches affecting salads' quality in particular.

It took me 3 days to acclimatise to the dining experience in there, not really my idea of fun.

Did not mind breakfast being a buffet quite so much, as a 7 am start meant fewer guests thus warmer food's faster arrival at a table- and lots less clatter & banging!

There is always quite a lot of traffic through the dining area, as bulk dishes in bain maries were arranged on 3 of the 4 walls, plus it is a passageway for guests and visitors heading for apartments behind hotel frontage. If it were my hotel, I would rearrange this area to promote a little more customer comfort, privacy and dignity whilst eating at a table.

All in all the Kennedy was good value, clean, and acceptable.
With attention to some details it could be super.
Its location is very good with a super outlook.

The Sliema area is very busy, but a taxi soon gets you away to quiter areas, or just walk.

The water bus service at 1.50 euro to Valetta is great! No late runs though....1730 last voyage.

WARNING

Ticket touts are a huge pest, as are timeshare/apartment criminals posing as poor salesmen....their conman methods are repugnant-do not believe a thing they say!

Foolishly my wife accepted one street conman's tempting "free gifts" only to be whisked into a lift to hours of high-pressure salemanship for apartments behind the hotels. I rescued her before an awful ending could be effected by the aggressors. NO THANKS!!!!
The "free gifts" were rudely reclaimed of course. This aspect of Sliema is very disappointing, and ruins an otherwise pleasant promenade experience. My advice is: say a firm NO.
( unless you actually enjoy being conned, gettingcheap baubles free, and wasting precious holiday time with nicotine stained salesmmen inside some timeshare shed)

SUMMARY

MALTA has very beautiful towns and buildings, with so much history to explore.

The island has very friendly people too, so helpful.

Just go, and enjoy.

Room Tip: Sea view from front rooms are best choice-upper floors

I recently spent a very agreeable couple of days there. The hotel is in a great position overlooking the bay with beautiful views(particularly from the roof garden) and excellent bus services and boat links to all parts of the island. The hotel is very clean and well presented, I was met by friendly and helpful staff. Quite a few guests are longer stayers in the winter though there is some turnover and they are a pleasant and friendly crowd.. The large screen TV is great for watching the sports events in particular and there is plenty of banter on these occasions. Internet is available to guests and many use their own with the hotel's wifi facilities.
The breakfast and evening meals are buffet style so there is plenty of choice to suit all. Evening walks along the front were an enjoyable feature, the town is clean, safge and yob free. I shall certainly return as there is so much to see on an island so steeped in history.

Room Tip: Sea front rooms have the best views but also some traffic noise.

This is the first time we've had an extended stay holiday. The hotel was classed as 4*. I would say it was more 3*. The staff were very friendly and were a credit to the hotel. We had a problem with the first room we were allocated, but we were offered, and accepted, another room, which was dark, but cosy. The room was cleaned daily, bedding and towels changed regularly. However, the mattress was lumpy, and the springs made a racket when you turned over. The pillows were cheap, pieces of foam, which were really uncomfortable. It would have been beneficial to have had better quality ones, with better support. (this was not just in our room, we spoke to several guests who had the same complaint, ) The meals were quite palatable. There was always something we could choose. However, my main grievance was that some of the food was cold. It really needed to be hotter. I wasn't sure I was keen on guests walking through the dining room at mealtimes, to get the lift to their rooms. The Kennedy Nova was well situated, being near bus stops and shopping areas. Beware though, of the touts selling timeshare. We watched them stopping people in the middle of the roads to try to get them interested. We were offered scratchcards, saying we'd won a bottle of wine (for wine, read vinegar!) then a card stating we'd won a luxury holiday. Believe me this is a ploy. They just want you into the hotel, where the big boys turn on the heavy sell. Then there were the sightseeing tour sellers, Hop on-hop off buses. I know these people are just trying to make a living, but they are stopping you every 20 yards or so. The 'entertainment' was dire. The same songs sung by different acts. If you like Engelbert Humperdink, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond etc., you're laughing (I wasn't) Beware too of the traffic. Vehicles travel really fast on the main road outside the hotel. All in all though, we found little to really complain about, and would consider going back.

Room Tip: We weren't really troubled by noise from other guests etc. You could try asking for a seaview ro...
