Owner description: We perform guided tours of Vinicola Benanti during the week. We start with an excursion on the vineyard Monte Serra, which is an ex crater of the Etna. Here we have the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio vines, with major part pre-philoxera and older than 100 years. We will continue by visiting the ‘palmento’ which dates from 1700. Following the tour there will be a local brunch accompanied with our most selective volcanic wines.

A gorgeous winery and surrounding vineyards, wonderful owners, and most importantly very tasty wine. We were hosted here, with a larger group, for a tour and private dinner and it was the highlight of our trip to Sicily. Thank you to the Benanti family.

I visited here this week with a group of professionals attending the International Wine Tourism conference. It was everything a winery should be, welcoming, friendly and professional at the same time, the family have got it just right The setting is magnificent, being able to visit the pre-phyloxera vines with a glass in hand just brings it all to life. To top it all off the wines were wonderful and paired beautifully with the meal in the splendid surroundings of the palatial family dining hall surrounded by the most amazing portraits - worth a visit on their own.

One of the highlights of our trip to Sicily this past fall was our visit to the Benanti Winery.

We had a little trouble finding it as it its entrance is almost hidden off a busy street in the little town of Viagrande. Once there however, it was like being transported to another world. Behind the brick walls and up a hill is the beautiful family home and vineyard of the Benanti family.

We had become aware of Benanti wines through one of our favorite Sicilian restaurants in NY, and also became aware how difficult it was to find their wines in a liquor store. One of our main goals was to come away with a list of distributors that we could tap into here in the states, and to order some of their wine to be sent back to the US (which we did, but I don't recommend because the customs process made it take more than a month to arrive).

Our tour guide was a sommelier who worked at the vineyard and she took us up the picturesque hillside where they plant the grapes and we tasted a gorgeous prosecco, looking out over the rolling hillside. The grapes were about two weeks from harvest, so they were blue/black and bursting with sweet juice. The berries hung from the vines in plump clusters begging for their place in a still life painting. They had to settle for a digital photo instead.

We went back down the hill into the old pressing room, which had the original hand turned stone presses from the winery's beginnings, a lovely snack of bruschetta and another glass of wine awaited us here. We then went into the massive and ornate family dining hall. The walls of the dining hall were filled with painted portraits and heavy carved wood furniture. At the bar here, we tasted several more wines, paired beautifully with a variety of cheeses.

The last stop on the tour was the tasting room in the winery building. A beautiful dining table was set out for us with a variety of meats, chesses, bread, olives and of course, their spectacular wines. We spent the remaining hour eating, drinking and talking with a small group off tourists from different parts of the world. It was a fabulous way to end our tour.

Before we left, we placed an order for the wines we liked best on the tour. We ended up ordering the Pietramarina Etna Bianco and the Sera Della Contessa Etna Rosso. As I mentioned earlier, they took a while to arrive, but what a pleasure once they finally got here.

I highly recommend this winery tour for those who appreciate good wine, good food and good company in a gorgeous setting.
