Visited with kiddo, and she liked seeing her favorite animals. But definitely the place could get a big uplift of the entire place, especially with regarding to the living spaces of the animals. Many of the places were rundown and the animals did not seem very happy. Compared to Singapore Zoo this was second. BEWARE the taxi stand outside is big rip off, talk to the Information desk who were very helpful and they will give you WiFi access to book your own taxi.

This zoo has me in two minds. It’s noticeably down at heel and needs a lot of work, but I really coming here.

The general upkeep of the zoo is lacking, there are broken paths, damaged displays and mold and rot everywhere you look. It looks as though no one has bothered repairing it since the 90s. Strangely, there are always gardeners working but not other maintenance?

It’s clear that there used to be KFC branded food through the park and this has now been converted into some generic fried chicken. We entered the central cafeteria only to leave it again in without eating.

We stopped at the safari area for an ice cream. This is the highlight of the zoo, with a large platform that you can climb and be above the animals. The panda exhibit is the most impressive, probably because it’s new and they were charging additional entry fees in the past.

The worst part of the zoo is the bee area, with moldy and rotting displays and crumbled walls. Bit of a shame, because the ladies selling honey products are really lovely, the building deserves an upgrade.

The animals here don’t seem too unhappy, which is a relief. But the structures and paths need a lot of work. Entry into the park is a considerable fee, I hope some of that can go to making improvements.

We took a trip to Zoo negara with our toddlers and here is a summary of our experience.

Opening hours: 9am-5pm daily

Cleanliness: 6/10 Zoo surrounding is reasonably kept.

Entrance fee: Adults RM44/pax and kids RM16 (3yrs above), kids 2 years and below are free.
*Malaysians bring you MYKAD or else you will be charged a higher price.

Facilities: 6/10
If you are planning to be at the zoo the whole day, bring your own packed lunch (fried rice/mix rice/fried noodles) and adequate water and snacks. The zoo does not have cafes selling good lunch worthy food.

The zoo has mini stalls selling steamed corn at Rm5/cup, maggi noodle cups at rm6/cup, 8 pcs cheese miniature sausages at rm6/cup. They also have a small cafe (at the panda viewing facility) selling cakes.

Bring your umbrella and hat as it can get very hot and there is a lot of walking involved. Overall a good experience for families with kids.

The zoo felt empty and the animals seemed lonely, the panda was beautiful to see but was shut in an area it clearly wanted out of by itself.
