“Nice cottage with some niggling issues”

The cottage was pleasant and well equipped, owner a bit stand offish, no welcome? There are obviously parking issues everywhere and thanks to the next door neighbor we hit their strategically placed concrete post and damaged the car! Although the oil fired boiler worked very well, sadly it was only able to produce 3 inches of hot water for a bath, but the shower was fine? The oven/grill was so complicated to use we needed to read the instruction everyday. The can opener had seized and rusted up and didn't work so couldn't open any tins. All rooms were nice especially the bedrooms and bathroom except for the lounge which was dark and oppressive. The rear yard was overgrown and had a fishy smelly. Overall sadly not good value for money, won't be going back.

We only stayed for a three night stay, a last minute decision. The cottage was all as expected and the large bathroom was definitely better than expected, lovely. We were able to park the car and leave it as it is a short walk to the village centre. The rail trail up the course of the original railway track up to Goathland was very enjoyable with the option of taking the train back. The yard is covered with translucent sheeting, is very warm ( when sunny) and ideal for drying walking gear. A previous review says take a BBQ , however there were two at the property whilst we were there

“Lovely cottage, perfectly situated for trips on the North Yorks Moors Railway.”

We only stayed one night but the cottage had everything we needed. Limited outdoor space but on the moors you didn't really need it. Would definitely stay again if we plan another trip on the railway.

“Enchanting village - Wonderful Short Break”

We have stayed at Lilac Cottage for years. This time we chose a long weekend. When arrived we found that the cottage had recently been refurbished to a great standard. We love the log fire, especially in the winter months! We always bring our dogs which Ruth and Ian are fine with. There are two living rooms which are perfect for when the children want to play a game or watch tv in the other room. There is an upstairs and downstairs bathroom. The beds are lovely and comfortable and fresh linen and towels are always provided. The decking is perfectly angled to catch the afternoon/evening sun - it really is a little sun trap. Also the garden is alive with butterflies and birds. We've enjoyed many BBQs there in the warmer months. Take your own BBQ though. There is a brilliant butchers in a nearby village called Sleights. The cottage is great value for money, especially when the location is taken into account!

The village is an idea retreat with the station, a pub and local shops on the doorstep. Whitby is a short car journey away (about 10 minutes) where there is always something to do. The weather was lovely and we walked from Goathland (Heartbeat Country) to Grosmont, calling at Birch Hall Inn for a liquid refreshment! This is also a popular watering hole with the locals... you'll find out why!!!

We would and have recommended Lilac Cottage. We'll be in touch soon for the summer holidays! Thanks again for a wonderful holiday x

Fantastic location home from home and close to the Steam train vintage station and not far from heartbeat film set. Would certainly recommend to family and friends!
