“A delighful cottage in a beautiful location”
Reviewed 4 August 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Our stay at La Menagerie was a resounding success. The house is
>beautiful, the setting is glorious and the weather was fantastic. Our
> three young grandchildren were in their element in the pool (thank
> goodness we had no close neighbours!) and we all became well
> acquainted with croquet and boules, although our skill levels were
> patchy to say the least! All in all, a great location for an extended family.

“A dream come true”
Reviewed 30 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

After years of traveling together throughout France, my husband and I were finally able this year to introduce our American family (ourselves, our adult children, and two grandchildren) to the travel experience we love the most: French country vacation.
I spent months looking for a house that would put us in the middle of fields but close to a village, be near castles and medieval towns but also swimming and bike-riding, give us village markets but proximity to Paris. And the house had to be beautiful, private, and also comfortable enough for a two-week stay. We found it all at La Menagerie. Even a family of peacocks.
Everything listed in the description of the house is accurate, from the antiques and dryer to the croquet set and bikes, but words don't capture the atmosphere of the house and the setting. It is truly private, beautiful, and quiet-- surrounded by fields, birdsong, and the occasional hot air balloon drifting overhead.
We couldn't think of anything the kitchen didn't have for cooking, the wifi was fantastic, the linen supply was generous, and the bathrooms and beds were terrific, but the charm of the house is what made me smile throughout our stay. The fabrics, art, books, and garden are all gorgeous.
Note: The upstairs rooms worked beautifully for the couple with young children, while the little cottage that can be rented for an extra charge was a lovely private lodging for a young couple the nights that we had extra guests.
And I can't say enough about the night we arranged to have the local chef Chantal cook and serve a dinner for us at the house to celebrate my retirement. It was the highlight of everyone's trip-- the food, the service, and her warm charm.
My only frustration with the trip was that the house and grounds were so wonderful that we had a hard time getting the family to leave it for chateau-visiting and markets.
Restaurant suggestions: the auberge in Chitenay was a fine experience, but our favorite dinner of the three-week trip was at the auberge in Veuves. Well worth the drive.
My compliments to Patrick, the owner, on everything he has done to make La Menagerie so special, including his exhaustive list of all information anyone could possibly want to have at any point in the trip. He was also available by email to answer questions along the way and set up the contact ahead of time for dinner with the chef.
Merci bien!

“Beautiful Cottage in the Countryside”
Reviewed 19 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

This cottage certainly lives up to its recommendations. It is in a beautiful location and is well if somewhat eccentrically appointed. However it does have one main drawback if any of your party are very tall. It is a traditional farmhouse that has been remodelled and as such the ceiling beams are quite low. Also the main bedroom upstairs has a traditional French double bed ( very short and really only 3/4s of a double) making it dificult for a tall couple to sleep on it. This is an excellent rental for a large or extended family but could be somewhat problematic for a group of couples as the quality and size of the sleeping accommodation varies dramatically.
