If you are thinking of making the long long trip to Figuig, "because it is there", very far from anywhere, you will be glad to know there is a good hotel at the end of your journey. The Hotel Figuig is clean, comfortable, well-maintained and quiet with splendid views of the palmeries and mountains from its cafe, gardens, terraces and salon.
However, your otherwise enjoyable stay may be spoiled by the unpleasant monsieur reponsable who thinks he is doing you a favour by letting you stay or answering any questions. I put my complaint about this man to the hotel director, but there was no improvement. The female assistant was by contrast helpful and pleasant.
I paid 140 dirhams (£10) a night for a clean, neat, simply furnished single room, with a shower / toilet / washbasin room en-suite. There was 24-hour hot water, and an aircon unit with warm air and cold air modes. I had a balcony with a nice view.
No English is spoken by the hotel staff. There is free wifi but not in the bedrooms. They serve tajines or couscous in the salon or the terrace in the evenings for 60 dirhams - order in advance - there is virtually nowhere else in town to eat.
Some minor grumbles: little storage space; no hangers in the wardrobe; no suitcase stand; room keys left unsecured on reception desk; no safety hand-rail in shower; your room will not be cleaned or beds made if you happen to have the key in your pocket at the relevant time, even if you are obviously in the hotel; constant irritating radio-gaga throughout the cafe-garden and sometimes in the reception area permeating to the salon; the cafe which is popular with local young men serves only drinks and factory-made cakes.
The town: There is nothing to dislike in Figuig: quiet, neat and clean. People are friendly. You could hire a bicycle for 50 dirhams just up the road from the hotel. There are no taxis and the bus stop is a long fifteen-minute walk if you have to trundle luggage. Go down to Z'naga and venture into the old quarter.
Travel information: The 06:00 CTM bus (alternate days) from Oujda dropped me right at the hotel gate by request, and the conductor dealt with the three police passport checkpoints en route - giving a smooth seven-hour journey with little delay. I carry copies in French of the "twenty questions" and answers the police apparently need on these near-the-border sensitive routes. I left Figuig on the 06:00 CTM to Bouarfa and changed to the 09:00 bus to Er Rachidia.
