“L' Hoste is the Mostest”
Reviewed 22 November 2011

What a wonderful experience! We had a grand week at L' Hoste Hotel the week of Nov. 12th -- 19th. The room was spacious and clean, the staff friendly and accommodating, and the beach was beautiful. On the second day the hotel opened its restaurant/beach bar which provided some excellent mid-day meals and bar service on the beach. We have never seen any group try as hard as they did to meet everyone's needs. Though the breakfasts were the same each day, who can find such delicious croissants in the States? The hotel was very French, an ambiance we thoroughly enjoy. If you are not willing to be transported into a different culture, don't go and complain. One of the restaurants, Le Piment, in the adjoining Orient Village provided excellent meals and service. Chrystal, the owner/manager of Le Piment, was a delight. Our one regret is that we only stayed a week. Next year it will be at least two weeks at L' Hoste.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second or third floor are better.

We stayed at L'Hoste 11/7-11/17/11 and booked through Orbitz. We booked a Standard room and were told it would be on the 1st floor. 2 weeks before our trip we learned that the hotel was under construction resulting in the beach bar/restaurant being closed. We contacting Orbitz and the hotel directly and confirmed this to be true however, were assured it was scheduled to be completed by the 1st week in November, so we just went with an open mind. Upon our arrival we met with Kelly at the front desk. She escorted us to a second floor Bamboo room without mentioning anything about an upgrade. The room was very average; the bed was king size and very comfortable. There were plenty of dresser draws and closet space for belongings. We also had a sitting area. The bathroom was large and clean, (we did have a couple days where there was no water for several hours, and were told it was the entire island not a hotel issue) although we had plenty of hot water it was very difficult to keep the water adjusted to a safe temp. The kitchen area offered a small refrigerator which was adequate. There was a stove top with 2 burners, a microwave a few dishes, pots, and other utensils, we did not use any as we don't cook while on vacation. The balcony faced the ocean however; the palm trees are very tall and obstructed the view. Not a big deal as we were only a few steps from the best views. The room was nice and sufficient however, some small changes could make it much more appealing. A handle on the outside of the balcony door would be nice to close it. . The curtains were not clipped on the valance and hanging half off. There were 3 pictures, 2 hanging on the wall 1 sitting on the floor. The ceiling fan was filthy and never cleaned for the duration of our stay The TV was a nice size flat screen however, should be on the wall not sitting on top of the dresser, as you could not see it over the footboard of the bed. There were 2 lights in the bathroom but only 1 light bulb. In front of the kitchen sink on the floor - be careful the door stop is sticking up and is a real toe breaker. (All of which are very small things and did not have an impact on our vacation) The pool bar, beach bar and beach restaurant were all closed until the day before our departure. They were having the 1st pool BBQ on the 17th which we missed. The beach was beautiful with plenty of chairs, restaurants and bars. Our favorite was Le Malibu which is located on the south side of the beach just a few places from club O. If you visit be sure to say hi from Tim and Linda to John Michael, great service, prices and conversation. We did visit Pinel Island, in our opinion tourist trap but great views. We also went to Philipsburg on a Sunday, almost everything was closed, (rep at the front desk assured us everything would be open) we did have lunch at Blue B---- restaurant and it was very good with some live music that we enjoyed. Our trip to sunset bar in maho was also a great experience watching planes. Tap five had some really good pizza and definitely recommend Andy and Cheryl's for the mussels. Overall we had a great time in St Martin and would recommend the L'hoste as it was good value for what we paid through orbitz. We would be happy to answer any ?'s

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor

My wife and I have been to Orient Beach a number of times and stayed at a number of hotels there. We try to go twice a year. This was, however, our first stay at l'Hoste (9-15 Nov). It won't be the last. First, you need to understand that these are all 3-star hotels; that is the standard they need to be evaluated by - and l'Hoste is excellent. From a location perspective, it cannot be beat. the others have good locations; L'Hoste's is great. Not only is it literally on the beach; it is also a minute's walk to all the very good restaurants/small grocery store in the "square." Rather than re-plow some of the ground contained in recent e-mails, let me offer a few additional thoughts. Yes, the guys at the beach are a little laid back about about getting umbrellas set up in the morning. Our experience was that if you ask, one shows up pretty quickly. Some unsolicited advice: Bring cash for drinks on the beach (1:1 exchange). While some of the restaurants in the square will accept cash on a 1:1 basis for breakfast and lunch, none do for dinner. Some of their bars will, however, and they are quite reasonable (Cote Plage, in particular). We don't rent a car, because Orient Beach has everything we need (you don't need to go the Grand Case to get a quality meal). Taxi is $35 from airport to hotel. If you do want to drive around for the day, the hotel can arrange a car. Drinking adriving is a very bad idea; there are random checkpoints at night.
Final thought. My wife and I go there because of the laid back, "charming" ambience. Yes, there are very minor hiccups (water off town-wide for half a day once & a while). Neon burn and nightlife? Nope. Beautiful place to decompress for a week? You bet. And l'Hoste is a great place to stay.

Charming little hotel

I was staying with my husband at l’Hoste from the 19th to the 24th of October. Spent a lot of time reading reviews on Tripadvisor, and it helped me in making my decision to stay in this cozy cute hotel. We got scared when we read about the construction comment, because we expected, well construction…with drilling, noise, and all the ‘side effects’….in reality, it was nothing…no big deal at all…their restaurant, La Playa, is closed for ‘construction’ for the slow season…but, there is no noise or anything that may disrupt your full enjoyment of the beach….and if you would like to have lunch or a cocktail right at the beach you can walk right into anyone of the beach bars or restaurants, they are literally adjoining each other, so you don’t have to even walk a few steps, it’s right next to you….also, I found all the negative comments about the hotel to be blown out of proportion by whining guests that have no common sense in dealing with minor life’s deficiencies or are way too demanding about little things that do not matter. The hotel is literally ON the beach (you can just run to your room wrapped with beach towel, that’s how close it is), and on one of the WORLD’S BEST BEACHES, surrounded by the EXQUISITE FRENCH RESTAURANTS on this PARADISE ON EARTH…So, what else would you need for happiness?

Room Tip: if they are not sold out, the best rooms are on the second floor, the mini suites

This was our first visit to L’Hoste and we enjoyed our stay. However, there are several things that prospective clients should know and will probably not be told by the hotel.
First I’ll list the things that we would rate as excellent. The main area around the pool is attractive with large palm trees, nice walkways, various tropical plants, and is well maintained. The pool is excellent; kept clean; was never crowded; open when you wanted to use it – not like some places that close mid-evening. Beach towels were replaced without question; beach is a short walk; plenty of room and has a more gentle slope into the water than at the Club Orient end; therefore good for children. The bed was king size; comfortable; second floor balcony/porch more than adequate; looked out on palm trees. I don’t believe any rooms had a view of the ocean. The bathroom was large enough; plenty of towels; open shower……..Best of all (from our perspective) this is a good place for people who like to do their own thing and don’t want to be driven crazy by all sorts of picky rules. The management seems to take everything in stride.
A couple other things; the central outdoor lounge area has a sectional sofa with pillows in a rough circle which is lit up at night. Since this is the wireless area, people came and went, and it was very comfortable. The nearby breakfast area is tables for 2 or 4 and the (included) continental breakfast was the best we have seen, with fresh coffee, quality tea choices; fresh bread, butter, jam, some delicious yogurts and a croissant. Wait staff here was friendly, helpful and pleasant.

Things that could have been better; the beach restaurant was closed down for renovation and roped off. This should have been mentioned. Since a great discount deal was being offered during the month we were there, we asked for the same discount as others were getting (and let us know about it) but they would not hear of it. We did book with WIOL and spoke to them also but figure that ultimately the hotel gets the money regardless of how you book. We will not use WIOL again, and advise others considering this and similar places to deal directly with the hotel. The bar by the pool was closed and filled with junk, but we were told would be open “around high season.” The hot tub was closed and unusable. There was no sign of advertised “weekly barbeques,” and when we asked others who stay there, they just laughed.

The young man who set up beach equipment was sleepy and otherwise occupied, so patrons just got their own umbrellas, until the 10 or 12 were gone. Water was off til noon a couple of days, but that was an island problem. The tiny ants reported by others are there and come in armies of thousands, and they bite. But they’re easy to wipe away; just don’t leave any crumbs of bread or cheese in your room! Cats and kittens are everywhere and mess up the comfortable lounge chairs around the pool. No one seems to notice.

Probably our biggest disappointment with this hotel is the “kitchenette.” The fridge is small but adequate. The stove is really a two burner hot plate that works well. Kitchen sink has only cold water. There is a microwave. No coffeemaker; when our friends asked for one they were told there were only 3 and “others had them.” I asked for a corkscrew for wine and was told “We have only 1 so bring it right back.” If you need any cooking utensils, bring them or buy them. There is no place for food unless you use the attached clothes closet.

Overall, we felt that this would be a good spot to visit again now that we learned some things the hard way. Our desire in writing this review is not to discourage other guests, but to let them know things we should have been told. With a beautiful beach, good beds, attractive grounds, and a staff that doesn’t cause you problems, they have a lot going for them. If a few simple changes were made, they would compete against any similar property on the island. Our advice would be, if there are any things that are special to you, ask them clearly before you book.
